sound preferences

Postby csaenemy » Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:11

Hi,
I have been using Sabayon 4.2 with the Gnome desktop since it was released. I have had all the usual newbie problems with kernel upgrades etc. but am steadily learning. I have little or no previous Linux experience and no programming or scripting knowledge.
This is not a major issue, but one of those niggles that I cannot find an answer to, no matter how hard I search.
How can I attach sounds to events, for example a startup or shutdown sound? The logical GUI based route ought to be through System/Preferences/Sound, but all I am seeing on the Sound Effects tab is a greyed out Alert Volume slider bar.
If it's necessary for me to use terminal commands I would appreciate clear instructions as to exactly what to type.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Further to my original post, when I type "gnome-volume-control" into terminal this is the output:

~ $ gnome-volume-control
** (gnome-volume-control:28504): DEBUG: Disabling debugging

** (gnome-volume-control:28504): WARNING **: Unable to find stream for bar

Obviously something is missing or in the wrong place.

It will probably be solved when Sabayon Linux 5.0 is out.

You can take a look at
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/PulseAudio
for gnome sounds

Thanks Wolfden. I already found this page through a reply to another post on here, but unfortunately still can't find the solution. I did as instructed under the heading "System sounds do not play (GNOME)", but to no avail:(
