Partition problem [Solved]

Postby stilllookingfor » Sat Aug 29, 2009 2:00

I have a problem with my partition.

I found out I have in my 500 GB hard drive that only has Sabayon 4.2:

dev/sda1 : ext4 : 102 MB
dev/sda2 : LVM : 47686 MB

Does that mean I only have 102 MB of free storage?

I am not intended to use my computer as a server or workstation and I don't know why I have a unusually huge LVM partition.

Or is this a Gentoo/Sabayon characteristics?

The small ext4 partition is probably just the /boot partition, which does not need to be big. The LVM partition is where all the rest of your directories will reside (/, /home, /etc and so on). So, the answer to your question is: No, it does not mean that you only have 102 Mb of storage.

After I ran Ubuntu as live, yes, you are right that it says /boot in the partition editor. Since I migrated from Ubuntu, where its / partition (usu. the biggest partition) is ext3 or ext4, Sabayon is very foreign to me.

So, will it be ok to ask what does LVM do?

See the following articles for a good explanation:

 Logical Volume Manager (Linux)

Marking this thread Solved, BTW, as you don't have a problem.
