Eying for a while

Postby SquidLord » Sat Aug 29, 2009 1:26

Well I've been looking at Sabayon for a little bit, started to like it and idk if it'll work on my hardware [the page is a little vague for me]

My desktop is:
GPU: 9800GX2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
RAM: ...6GB...[all that's really relevant]
MOBO: EVGA 780i SLI
ummm, i think that's all that's needed to determine

My notebook is an HP Pavilion dv6000 [that's all it says]. I know there's an issue with wireless, from when I tried to hackintosh it [intels 3945 NIC], but the Jolicloud OS [based off of Ubuntu] works wonderfully. Think it'll work here?

Which distro's should I download? Gnome? KDE? Direct links are preferred for me [just to limit confusion].

There isn't any reason why Sabayon (or any other modern distro for that matter) shouldn't run on the above listed hardware - but one of the wonderful things about Nix is the LiveDE boot from the disc and try it out, if it works then install it :)

Personally I prefer Gnome but your desktop environment is really a choice you need to make for yourself, if you have bandwidth to burn try downloading each of the discs and seeing which one you like more. At any rate I see both your systems have 64bit processors so you want the 64bit disc

Sabayon 4.2 64bit Gnome iso
Sabayon 4.2 64bit KDE iso

Also if you do choose to install Sabayon, don't make the same mistake I did the first time around - be sure to read this VERY helpful page on how to get your system updated and fully working. Its not as straight forward as other distros, but if you follow the information listed its not hard.

Wow, thank you for the info. The only question I have is what is the noticeable difference between Gnome and KDE environments?

They both perform the same function, fully developed desktop environment, both look and feel a little bit different. I think Gnome is a bit easier to learn - but again thats just me ;). Try Googling around for some screen shots of the two DEs and see which one you think is prettier :D
