How should I be updating my system in Sabayon?...

Postby Jeff91 » Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:26

Hey There,

I'm new to Sabayon, but not Linux, and I was wondering what exactly should I be using to keep my system up to date? After a fresh install I ran an
Code: Select all
emerge --update world && equo update
and they successfully downloaded all updates (after a bit of poking and prodding). Anywho even after both of those commands said the system was fully up to date Sulfur popped up in the corner of my screen letting me know that there where still 200 some odd updates to download (they are downloading and installing now).

I was just wondering which of the three (or should I be using all of the above?) should I be using to install/update packages/my system as a whole?

You should not use emerge (portage) and entropy (equo - sulfur) unless you know exactly what you are doing
This has been posted in many of the threads in the sabayon forum

It would be wise for you to read the following links

I must admit I still have not read everything, but when I get stuck or need to ask a question I search the wiki, forum (the Beginners|Newbies Area is good staring point), read the manuals, google a lot and when I'm really stuck gentoo documentation and forum

You can see in the sabayon wiki...
is better and more easy to use entropy, nor portage.
use sulfur or equo command, bu first, see in the wiki.
also many posts in this forum have the procedure...

I don't know much about emerge/portage, but as far as equo/entropy goes, I know that all you did is update your local repository so that it's aware with the recent changes in repository. In other words, after "equo update", all you did is syncronize your local repository... basically, you just told sulfur (among others) to fetch the list of the latest packages from the sabayon repositories (NOT install them).
In order to do a full update you should have done:
Code: Select all
equo update && equo world

Sometimes, you may need to do an "equo conf update" afterwards, but you will see if that is necessary at the end of the output of "equo world" (since this would be your first update, you will definitely be asked to do one of those).
Like the others said, it's better to stick with one of the package managers (I personally prefer entropy), but read the wiki beforehand (as a general rule, like they say, RTFM when jumping to an unknown tool)
