Network manager in Gnome or knetworkmanager in KDE should auto handle connecting your 3g device once connected properly. However I know many devices require the use of usb_modeswitch on Linux as they are multiple USB devices.

@ Jeff
is it possible for one to edit the sftab to handle the auto mounting the usb device of the 3g modem and then edit the wvdial.conf file to configure the device?

If your 3g modem is detachable (most are) I believe you would be better off creating a udev entry for it rather than editing fstab because, someone please correct me if I am wrong, I am decently sure the fstab is for devices that are always attached - where is the udev is configurable for remove-able devices (again only 90% sure about that)

As for the wvdial.conf I am not sure because as I said I always use the nm-applet (included in the Gnome desktop) to handle my Cricket 3g device.
