equo & emerge

Postby apiaio » Mon Aug 03, 2009 19:27

I'm trying to install xorg-server. Equo wants to install version 1-5.3-r7 and emerge 1.6.2.201. Why? I thought that those two commands are equivalent. Equo for installation of binaries and emerge for compilation. Am I right or have I missed something? Can I combine equo and emerge when building new system? ( I mean one package install using equo and another one using emerge )

Is not that easy as equo is binary and emerge is source. Entropy packages are build from portage ones so entropy will never have higher versions than portage.
There are a few packages like xorg-server that aren't easy to update and keep the system working without any issue. That's the reason it is that old. Another package may be old because a dev forgot to update it in entropy but you can request a version bump in our bugzilla if you want.

That said, if you mix entropy and portage, you'll break your system. I believe that if you had knowledge enough to know how to mix them you won't be asking here at all.

Thanks for the answer. It is clear now. I will use Entropy.
After installation in make conf are defined two video cards: "fbdev and vesa", but I have ATI Radeon 9200SE video card and in make.conf of my Gentoo installation is
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vga"
.
Should I edit Sabayon's make conf e.g. this way
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vga fbdev vesa"
?
When using Entropy, will installed packages accept settings in make.conf?

I'am not a Sabayon expert but I'am using Gentoo since around 5 years now!!

/etc/make.conf belongs to Portage (Gentoo)
and
Entropy belongs to Sabayon!!! (/etc/entropy)
see more about make.conf here ::: http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=Portage

Editing make.conf file will affect the way portage will configure and build your packages!
Entropy will install only binary packages!! (one fits for all!!!) (binary packages are already built!!)(binary packages (entropy) will not see your USES o CFLAGS ...inside your /etc/make.conf file)
It could be possible to rebuild a new Sabayon package (by yourself) using portage .... but you will have to know very well how Portage is working and also know very well what you are doing!! otherwise mixing source and binary packages under Sabayon could break your system!!

think you missed a couple !! in there

I see a lot of people that love to use !!! I have a hard time understanding what they are trying say by using !!! with every sentence.

I was taught in school that you use ! to emphasize something, like for example: Look out for that golfball it's headed your way! or the old Timber!

I'm not picking on you frank, don't get me wrong, I just see it a lot by many and curious with why people do it.

Does ! mean more with !! or !!! or !!!!! To me CAPS drive a point better than a bunch of !s DO NOT feed the bears seems better than Do not feed the bears!!!!!!!!!!!

and back to regular broadcasting
Anyway frank is correct with the binary usage with config files.

What has wolfden written must be something instructive. I don't come from english speaking country and I don't understand one sentence correctly :oops: . Could anybody translate it?

lol, don't worry about it

Just keep in mind

equo for binary packages, emerge for compiling - mixing shouldn't be done unless you know fully what you are doing.

Very interesting comment of wolfden about punctuation mark (!!!) ?
... but I think focusing more on solving problems in this forum will be more useful to everyone than ... focusing on exclamation point!

Not that I have an issue with exclamation marks, but if people read and use them differently, then it makes it harder to understand what exactly the poster is trying to say. The entire reason of having grammar is so that everybody knows not only what you are saying, but how you are trying to get your point across. It does make a difference. If somebody uses an exclamation mark, or a question mark, or capital letters where they don't need to be, I typically need to go back and read the sentence again, in a way that makes sense to me.

There is no wrong or right way to type a message on the forum, but consistency is always something that is appreciated.
