catastrophic system failure - urgent

Postby minimayhem » Mon Aug 03, 2009 17:49

hello,

im sorry to appear stressed or impatiant but i have encountered a serious problem with my system; story goes:

i have been having problems with volume control on my system and emerge kmix to see if that solved the problem, took a while so i left the laptop to do its thing, I came back and noticed that the theme and colour scheme I had selected had changed to a very basic white block scheme, I thought it was just a little problem and ignored it and restarted; upon restart the system doesnt boot into the regular desktop login screen; instead a VERY basic KDE desktop, to which it presents me with konsole upon login. I'm new to sabayon, so I'm unsure as to what log files to provide you with, but for me this is a serious issue as I do my work on sabayon, and would like to fix this without having to do another full reinstall which would once again mess up my grub setup; which has currently been setup for windows 7, XBMC and Sabayon KDE.

My system is a Vostro 1000 laptop with 2.0 AMD sempron 3600+ with 1GB of RAM.

Please, any help is hugely appreciated I will provide any log files needed, but Im just curious as to how kmix could have caused this problem?

thanks,

MM

UPDATE

I have just seen upon boot that there is an error message saying 'No KDM located in:', problem is I cannot see the entire listed directories as it boots far to quickly.

I think emerge could have pulled many packages that damaged your installation,
emerge is an advanced tool, so pay attention when you use it, especially, you should
use it always using the -av option and watch what it wants to do, like:
Code: Select all
emerge -av kmix

Are you able to do this in your basic environment, as root?
Code: Select all
equo database gentoosync
equo update
equo install --ask kdm
equo deptest

This should sync equo with portage, install kdm and check dependencies.

Hi Micia,

Thank you for your reply and I'm sorry for my late one, just returned from being out of the country. I tried the commands as you said, but unfortunatly the problem still occurs. I'm just going to try one more time to see if the problem is resolved, is the best option available to me to just reinstall Sabayon?

Thanks,

MM
