Intel 855GM woes

Postby KarelGonzalez » Fri Jul 31, 2009 17:58

Hi, all.

I'm having issues with my intel 855GM graphics card on my gateway 3040gz laptop. I can't seem to get the intel driver up and running, so I have to fall back on the vesa driver, which is no good. I get NO 3d acceleration, and have to use the less-than-desirable screen resolution of 1024x768. Sabayon 4.2 KDE

Now, the things I have tried so far...

using 915resolution to reconfigure the mode... didn't help.
setting the mode in xorg.conf... didn't help.
Recompiling the kernel to use modesetting... didn't help.

Whenever I try to change the driver to "intel" in xorg.conf, when I restart X it says "Fatal server error could not bind memory for BO back buffer."

Some logs:

Re: Intel 855GM woes

The older intels are a pain. I have had several old dells with the intel video.
The cures I have found
1, stick with an older kernel sabayon 4.0 has the .27 kernel and the intel works well with it.
2, install a .30 kernel I did this a few months ago and the older intels work pretty good with the .30 kernel
3, wait for branch 5, will be out reasonably soon and will fix the issue
4, install an agp card....most older apg cards are weak and require legacy or other older drivers, a different pia.

I feel your pain, I get these old dells cheap as the market is flooded with them. Fix up a few and give them away and use the older kernel for those as it is stable and can be updated.
Just wanted you to know it is a kernel / driver issue and not distro specific, but a cure is available.

Okay, I think I want to try to upgrade to the new kernel, but I'm not really sure how to go about that in sabayon. I know how in gentoo. Is it the same procedure as far as downloading the sources, running menuconfig, then making the sources and modules, or is there a different/easier way to do it?
