Wireless LAN Broadcom 4312 [Solved]

Postby Rajkumar » Fri Jul 10, 2009 17:59

Hi,

I am really new to linux. Have managed to install Sabayon 4, however am struggling to get my wireless LAN going.

The hardware is compaq CQ40 317TU and wireless PCI card is Broadcom4312. I have tried using ndswrapper, it does say that bcmwl5 installed but no hardware is detected.

Can somebody let me know if 4312 is one of the working devices?? Also the steps to be followed. I also need the correct driver.

Thanks a lot, I really like sabayon, and I want to give it a try.

cheers

First thing to do is plug in a network cable (providing you can), either from router to computer or modem to computer then in a terminal type
su
Password: (type your password)

equo update

emerge --sync && layman -S

equo conf update

Then install wicd
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... _with_WICD

If wicd still not working then in a terminal as root type
emerge wicd

Hi,
Some time ago I had problems with bcm4318 and found out not all drivers are working. Searched some forums and the best drivers for 4312 are here..
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
Can you past here your "lsmod", please? There might be an incorrect driver in the system already, like in Ubuntu..

I can't see ndiswrapper in modules...
You have to add ndiswrapper to /etc/modules.. :)

Did the above again, looks like last time around the equo update did not happen. This time however it went on and on and on. Not that I know what each command does (if somebody can explain that would be good).

well anyway wicd now reports an error and I lost my wired LAN as well in the process. The error is wicd could not find dbus.

So guys I do not understand what is going on. If somebody can help me recover from this that would be great.

1. Should I now remove wicd ? how do I do that? when I rmmod it says wicd is not in this directory. wicd launches at start up anyway.
2. If I have wicd then should I still go for installing the broadcom driver? at root the system says driver (bcmwl5 driver is installed) but there is no hardware detected.

I would be grateful if you could help me out.

Also if I have to install ndswrapper again then let me know the process and commands. I went through a video class for this yet looks like the module does not exit.

I really do not know how the bcmwl5 driver got in then?

Lets get you going first before we start pointing you to links in the wiki for your questions
Rajkumar wrote:when I rmmod it says wicd is not in this directory.

Do not rmmod anything
Rajkumar wrote:(bcmwl5 driver is installed) but there is no hardware detected

Your card is listed in lspci
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

To get Network Manager working again in a terminal as root type
rc-update del wicd
rc-update add NetworkManager
exit
exit

Plug in your wired network cable
Restart computer

When computer starts wicd will want root password, just ignore or cancel, because Network Manager should be loaded automatically and you should be connected to the internet via your wired network cable

Open a terminal as root and type
emerge wicd

When it has finished installing wicd-1.6.2 a message telling you config files need updating
So still in the same terminal type
equo conf update

Another message will be displayed asking you a question just type in the same terminal
-5

When that has finished, type in the same terminal
rc-update add wicd
rc-update del NetworkManager
exit
exit

Restart computer
Remove your wired network cable

Let us know how you go
Joe

Note
If all works OK, Sulfur will want to install wicd-1.6 which looks like isn't working on your system (same with mine) so when you are doing updates with equo or sulfur do not select wicd-1.6 as it will replace wicd-1.6.2 with wicd-1.6 and then your wireless won't work again

If using wicd-1.6.2 you might have to Enable SSID Broadcast in your router not the computer software.
Other settings in my router are (may help you to fault find)
Enable Wireless Security,
Wireless MAC Address Filtering: Enabled,
Filtering Rules: Deny the stations not specified by any enabled entries in the list to access
DHCP Settings, DHCP Server: Enable
Address Reservation each computer on this page has status enabled and is permanent

When I do this I get :

No one would believe me if I said I haven't had file collisions yet, but the truth is I haven't because I usally install programs with equo or and sulfur, I used emerge wicd because wicd-1.6.2 is not in equo yet

I will have to do some reading about file collisions, unless someone who has experience with file collisions could please jump in with some help thanks

But for now try downgrading to wicd-1.5.9-r1 in a terminal as root type
equo conf update
emerge --sync
emerge -u =net-misc/wicd-1.5.9-r1
equo conf update
rc-update add wicd
rc-update del NetworkManager
exit
exit

Restart computer
Remove your wired network cable

The command emerge --sync will not take as long as it did the first time
Don't forget to answer with -5 if you have config files that need updating

Lets hope you don't have problems this time
