Lexmark X4580 Wireless with DVD Live

Postby cathrine-ann » Sun Jun 21, 2009 9:00

I am in the process of evaluating whether to install Sabayon 4.1 on my desktop. I have the program on DVD. It loads and runs fine. But I can't print to my Lexmark X4580, which is connected wirelessly to my desktop. Wrote Lexmark to see if I could get a printer file. No response. Any suggestions? I need a readymade solution as I can't program.

According to the Linux Foundation's OpenPrinting database, the Lexmark X4580 is a paperweight, i.e. it's not supported. Sorry.

OK. Thanks. Then two questions:
What is that information at the bottom of the e-mail?
For comparison, how can I find out what multi-function wireless printers are available for Sabayon 4.1?
Much appreciated.

I'm not sure to what you are referring. Which e-mail? If you mean the text at the end of my post, below the line, it's called a 'signature' and is user-defined. In my case I chose to use my signature to list my hardware and software installation plus the fact that I use the Portage package manager rather than the Equo/Sulfur package manager. But if you aren't referring to my signature, I have no idea.

Consult the aforementioned Linux Foundation's OpenPrinting database. Use their Search facility with combinations of keywords such as wireless, perfectly, multifunction, MFP etc. and you'll get a Google list just from that site. Alternatively, if you have another model in mind, use their Printer Listings Search facility to specify the manufacturer and model, to check if it is supported by Linux. HP usually has good support for Linux. If you don't know of any other models of wireless MFP, I recommend that you do some Googling to find a few models and then check on the OpenPrinting Database site to see if they are supported. As Sabayon Linux is a customised version of Gentoo, you can also Google the model and "gentoo" to see if that model has been used successfully with SL/Gentoo in particular. You could also use the SL Forum's search facility to check if a particular model has been mentioned in these forums.

Thank you for the advise. Also you answered my "e-mail" question correctly, though I must admit I didn't ask it very clearly. I was referring to your signature. A-shopping I shall go!
