Need player with RMVB support under Sab4.1 [Solved]

Postby lameismyname » Sun May 31, 2009 17:19

Hi there,

I'm a new user to sabayon linux. I'm not newbie to linux, just to this distribution. It gives me more problems than gentoo because of untested/beta things so I came here with a small question. Lack of time pushes me to ask.

How the hell can I run rmvb movies?

Need this very much. Tried installation of smplayer/kmplayer/mplayer - falied because of cmake version.
realcodecs - masked
realplayer - impossible to install
w32codecs - installed, no problem, but it gives me nothing
gxine - can't open RMVB
VLC and Dragon (out-of-the-box players) - can't open RMVB
Packages which really could help me are masked in emerge :/

Need some advice. Please reply.

Well, I'm just watching an RMBV sample now with MPlayer on SL 4.0-r1 x86 edition, so I can confirm that it is possible to watch RMBV videos with MPlayer. Below are the full package installation details.

eix output:

What edition of SL are you using? x86 or x86_64? GNOME or KDE?

Thanks for reply. I have Sabayon 4.1 KDE 32Bit.

Already fixed the problem by using equo... installed smplayer (which is based on mplayer). No problems.

Problems were when I was using emerge (cause I use it by default), almost nothing worked normally :/
When I read about sabayon that it's fully compatible with gentoo I think "ok, this must be a gentoo distribution which differents by only some pre-installed stuff" but in practise it's really different. There are some problems with portage and the kernel isn't the real from gentoo but at least it's supported by gentoo.

Just need to give this distro some time, it has a very good thing to me.... it's working :)

By the way, I'm not sure what precisely you meant when you wrote that SMPlayer is "based on MPlayer". Actually, SMPlayer is a front-end for MPlayer. The application actually playing the video is still MPlayer. SMPlayer provides a nice GUI for the MPlayer 'engine'.
