no sound when trying to record

no sound when trying to record

Hi,

I would like to do some simple recording with my laptop (Dell XPS M1530) however, it is not registering any sound input through the line in. Under Capture Devices it lists:
HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog)

under KMix everything is unmuted.

Thanks for any help

It's worth running alsamixer as root in a Terminal window just to make sure everything is unmuted. Press the TAB to page beteween the Playback, Capture and All views. Next thing to check is if you have the latest ALSA packages installed. Do an equo search alsa to see what is installed and what is the latest version available. Make sure in the Control Centre you have the audio device set to Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, and try selecting Full Duplex.

If none of these work, try running alsaconf as root user in a Terminal window,

you could try playing with the switches tab in kmix too. sometimes that can help.
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Also try to unmute your digital line.
For my case, i cannot record until i unmuted my digital line.

Just by looking through your search results, you can see which packages are installed, their version, and the available version:

So try installing the latest versions, by opening a Terminal/Kconsole window, logging in as the root user and entering the following command:

I'm not a KDE 4.* user (and therefore not a PulseAudio and Phonon user), so hopefully someone who is will post some other things for you to try. However, in the meantime I noticed the following in the Ubuntu forums regarding KDE 4.* audio:

Sound Capture and recording
Phonon does not currently offer a alsa default device or a pulseaudio device for sound capture and recording in System Settings/Sound. For applications using Phonon there is currently no way to direct them to use the pulseaudio input devices so for now you are stuck with choosing hardware devices in System Settings/Sound for sound capture/recording. This is not so bad because Phonon gives you a lot of choices including the ability to capture hardware output streams as well as inputs.
