Will not boot to gui after try to install frostwire?[Solved]

Postby NicelyMKVI » Mon May 25, 2009 13:34

I installed limewire and could not get it to connect so I then followed the wiki to install frostwire. I am running sabayon 4.1 gnome. I tried to get online and my web browser would not start. I then tried to open terminal and that program would not start. I restarted my computer and it loads to around 90% then goes to text.
I see several errors I guess(newbie)
start-stop-daemon: failed to start '/usr/bin/gdm'
ERROR: could not start the Display Manager

***WARNING*** the program 'ntpd' uses the Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.
***WARNING*** Please fix your application to use the native API of Avahi!
***WARNING*** For more information see <http://0pointer.de/avahi-compat?s=libdns_sd&e=ntpd>
You need an /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf file first!
There is a sample file in /etc/proftpd.
ERROR: proftpd failed to start.

I checked my graphics driver version etc and everything matches. I searched the wiki and tried cheat codes and when I run equo deptest, it lists about 10 things needed but says cant find them. I did the equo update, emerge --sync and everything from the entropy wiki. Kind of flying blind in case you cant tell. Is there no way to run a system check etc and do a repair?

Thanks,
Jason Nicely

If you login in text mode and run:
Code: Select all
startx

does it brings your GUI to life?

Thank you micia for the reply. I tried what you suggested but unfortunately it did not work. I recieved another error message:

xauth: error while loading shared libraries: libxcb-xlib.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It repeats this 7 times with the sixth time starting with, xinit instead of xauth.

Thank you for your help.

Thanks for the reply wolfden. I ran them both after running equo update etc and it did not help. It says:

Installing available packages in 10 sec...
Calculating needed dependencies...
Cannot find needed dependencies:
Not found: >=dev-libs/libgamin-0.1.10
Probably needed by:
[from:zenana] app-admin/gamin-0.1.10
Not found: >=app-admin/gam-server-0.1.10
probably needed by:
[from:zenana] app-admin/gamin-0.1.10
caching complete.

I forgot to mention a week or so ago I tried to install e17 using the wiki but nothing ever happened. I had not restarted my computer until the other day. Could that be a problem?

the zenana repository is no longer supported.

Thanks kodiakmax. I found that out last week but I just did not remove it yet. Could that be the problem? I am going through withdrawals here and am having to use my wifes XP box.

I have emails, pictures, music etc. Is there a chance I am going to lose all this?? I just installed limewire, then frostwire by the wikis instruction, and when I clicked on the firefox icon etc the program would not open. I restarted the computer and it starts in terminal mode or something. I am still a newb. X will not start.

Thanks again for your help.

more than likely that is your problem as zenana is not maintianed the packages and versions it is looking for is not in the zenana repo and official tree is only up to app-admin/gamin-0.1.9-r1 not 1.10
Just edit your /etc/entropy/repositories.conf and remove the unsupported repos. then run a complete system update. should fix your problem. Here is the command I use to update my system
Code: Select all
emerge --sync && layman -S && update-eix && update-eix-remote update && equo update && equo install equo sulfur entropy layman portage && equo libtest && equo deptest && equo conf update

then run sulfur to download and install the packages or run
Code: Select all
equo world --ask

It will more than likely be telling you it is going to "downgrade" a lot of packages; that is OK, it will get you back onto the official tree path which is then supported.

I tried gedit /etc/entropy/repositories.conf and it says:

gedit: error while loading shared libraries: libxcb-xlib.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Thanks for your help.

use a terminal text editor like nano
from within terminal window type:
Code: Select all
nano /etc/entropy/repositories.conf

keyboard shortcuts to save and stuff are at the bottom when you run it. the "^" equals the "ctrl" button on your keyboard.
so ctrl+x to exit and it will also ask if you want to save. or ctrl+o to save and continue working.
remember to be root when trying to edit it or you will have permission problems.
