Can't add KDE menu item [Solved]

Postby zhidayat » Fri May 22, 2009 9:28

Hi,
I am a newbie, in Sabayon and Linux as well. I have installed Sabayon KDE and update it all (equo world). I have installed xpdf and I found that the Xpdf icon in KDE taskbar is not installed. How can I add the icon automatically or manually?
Thanks in advance

Best,
Zulkifli

have you tried to just log out and log back into to see if it shows up? KDE seems to a bugger for stuff like that, otherwise use the K DE Menu Editor and manually add it.

Restarted do not give any change.
I forgot to tell that I have tried to use Menu Editor, but don't know where to find the icon. It should be included in the package isn't it?

FYI: I use Sabayon 4.1 AMD64 on my laptop

Stil no icon. Actually, and sorry for my forgetfulness, I added the menu manually. It's not added after equo install. I also try, perhaps useless, to uninstall and install again. Still no icon or item added to taskbar.

I had exactly the same thing with KTorrent (Deluge installed by default, KTorrent wasn't), installed/removed/repeated a few times, couldn't add the icon to the menu/panel and couldn't fire up KTorrent in any way (alt-f2, konsole, w/e).
After a few retries I gave up, a few days later I retried and it worked like a charm at first attempt: icon was added to menu automatically (making it a lot easier to add to quicklaunch) and the app itself works fine. I didn't do anything else in the mean time.
No idea what caused this though and no idea how to find that out  but the problem seemed to've solved itself...

One thing I am curious about though: is it only the icon that is missing, but will the app launch?

Do you mean to say you logged out and logged in again, or did you actually restart X?
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

Right click on kickoff Application Launcher

Select Menu Editor (left click) from the context menu
The Menu Editor window will open

Click on Utilities
Click on New Item
The New item dialog will open
Type Xpdf
Click OK

Xpdf now appears under Utilities and should be selected
In the right hand side of the KDE Menu Editor you should see 2 tabs named General and Advanced

The General tab will be displayed and have Xpdf in the Name: section
The Description, Comment and Command sections will be blank
Now just type xpdf in to the Command: section

If you want to change the ? Icon to a different icon then click the ? Icon (next to Name: and Description:) and select an icon from the Select Icon window that appears, then click OK

Click save
Close KDE Menu Editor

Xpdf will be in the Applications - Utilities section of the kickoff Application Launcher

Hope this is what you wanted
Have fun

As Reemz said, it just works also in the first attempt after several attempts a few days ago. Thanks for any replies ...
