I'm using a brand new ati card (a 4650 or something), it is supported by the latest drivers (this is on my desktop, not laptop).
What fixed it for me (and whoever marked
this thread [SOLVED]) was re-installing the video driver package
- Code: Select all
equo install ati-driver
I guess it would be
- Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-driver nvidia-settings
for an nv card.
I could tell 3d had stopped working, I ran 'acceleration-manager' and it told me so
After the re-install, 3d was working again, so choosing the 'Enhanced Desktop Experience' (from Acceleration-Manager) enabled Compiz and all was well

I read (Wolfden's?) thread/wiki about upgrading drivers after a kernel upgrade, it wasn't clear that it would be necessary after an update (eg 2.6.29.9 -> 2.6.29.10). It seemed to imply it was only necessary after an upgrade (eg 2.6.29 -> 2.6.30). If it's on the wiki I might add a note to this effect.
