Compiz is broken

Postby 00110111 » Tue May 19, 2009 1:07

Hello, i am currently using Sabayon 4.1, and recently, when I rebooted my Sabayon system, Compiz would not even start. Like it shows the window, but the top bar is not there. I have tried multiple solutions, but none work. Does anyone know a fix to this?

I was playing around with Compiz settings the other day and ended up with same
problem because I selected Reset to defaults in Preferences (it unselected
everything)

If you just want Title Bar back, right click on Compiz Fusion Icon in systray
(next to clock) and select KWin from Select Window Manager (you still will not
have Compiz working and will have to reselect Compiz after making changes)

How I got Compiz to work again after I broke it

Restart Computer with Sabayon Live DVD select 3D mode

When system is loaded
Double click on CompizConfig Settings Manager

Click on Preferences

Click on Export
save the file as what ever you like in your Home directory on your hard drive
(can't remember if I had to mount my hard drive first)

Close all open programs and reboot (don't forget to remove DVD)

When system is loaded
Double click on CompizConfig Settings Manager

Click on Preferences

Click on Import

Browse to where you saved the file (when in the Open Dialog, select All files)
select the file you saved then click open

If you selected KWin from Compiz Fusion Icon, reselect Compiz

Hope this helps

usually if compiz doesn't start it is something to do with opengl issues. make sure your eselect opengl is set correctly. check your xorg.conf make sure composite is enabled. Does your Xorg.0.log tell you anything? Or the .xsessions-errors file?
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.

run
Code: Select all
fusion-applet
from command line, switch to Metacity or whatever, then back to compiz and paste the output here

sorry for not posting for a while. Well, I have tried all the above selected methods, but none work. Exporting and then Importing the settings does nothing. My Xorg.conf is fine, and I cant operate the OpenGL, but i don't believe that is the problem. typing in 'fusion-applet' does nothing. I am lost. :(

Not sure, but have you tired reinstalling all the Compiz stuff?

dev-python/compizconfig-python
x11-libs/compiz-bcop
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-gconf <-- If you use GNOME
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-kconfig <-- If you use KDE
x11-libs/libcompizconfig
x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-extra
x11-plugins/compiz-plugins-main
x11-apps/ccsm
x11-wm/compiz
x11-wm/compiz-fusion <-- This is a meta package and pulls in some of the others, but no harm to install them anyway
x11-apps/fusion-icon
x11-wm/emerald
x11-themes/emerald-themes

Before you re-install them, do an eselect opengl list and then an eselect opengl set <n> where <n> is the number in the square brackets corresponding to xorg-x11. Then after re-installing them, if you're using a closed-source ATI or Nvidia driver then repeat the command but make <n> the number corresponding to the manufacturer of your GPU.

I am experiencing the same problem, but only logged in as root. Everything consistently is working great on user account. It is affecting all windows, no title bar, and appears to be directly related to compiz settings. I am also not able to start desktop acceleration. will try the live dvd import/export fix, but vers have changed since that release... fingers crossed.

export/import settings appears to have corrected compiz and the accelerated desktop... but I still have no title bar on the top of any windows. I tried to change the theme, but theme cofigs are not found. This is likely to be a simple fix...
any help?

Running x64 4.1, boot splash indicates 4.2, all packages are up to date as well as sabayon overlay. I may try re-installing gnome, but I don't want to blow up my user account settings, they are working well.

If you have plenty of hard drive space, instead of reinstalling just create another partition and install Sabayon on the new partion, at least you will still have the other with all your settings.

Sorry can't help with finding your missing config files
Have fun

For the missing title bar on windows, have you tried re-installing the Emerald Theme Manager (the two packages x11-wm/emerald and x11-themes/emerald-themes)?
