Network question SB4.1

Postby lestoil81 » Tue May 12, 2009 18:34

It was great to see the live-dvd and the installed SB4.1 also connect me to the internet automatically. My desktop is connected through a router to my dsl modem. Prior to this I used pppoe to connect to internet. Other than those connections I'm not on a network setup.

When I ran Entropy Repository manager no connection was established. And I was told to check my network setup.( I haven't run pppoe either.) I don't think I am on a network and would like to disable some of the network programs for better security and leaner SB. Anyone have any advise please?

Not sure if this is related but the Spritz program doesn't actually download/install programs. When I picked 5 progams to install, I got as far as you must read and agree to acroread license. After saying I agree Spritz acknowledged the agreement and got stuck their. Then with a sense of humor the message came up "I'm just hanging around, not really doing anything " Equos was able to get the packages. Firefox works fine. Thanx for the easy install dvd:)

Spritz:
Yup spritz does that = finished installing = can continue with other spritz things you want to do.

Networking:
In 4.1 gnome or kde you would see top righ for gnome and bottom right for kde icons that is network related,

Gnome is easy:
Top right next to time = Old dail-up looking icon of 2 pc's that is connected or with red x = not connected and click and connect, lan cat5e cable network to router usually auto connects. Wifi might need some help like a password for encrypted wifi network's.

Kde very tricky:
To figure out and not too easy to use is the icon right bottom corner almost invisible just click there and then the network thing will pop-up and jump around but eventually you will get it to do what you need and show for wireless something that looks like a small antenna tower with rings around it.

Text / terminal:
You can also do things manually with " net-setup " text / terminal and signed in as root user:
Exampe of what it looks like:
# su
passwd:
#
# net-setup eth0
passwd: is the root password you used on install or livedvd one in livedvd mode " root "
This will then ask you to add info to the eth0 related to get it working.

Confirm all is well:
To check if it is working type " ifconfig " and you should see somewhere numbering looking similar to 192.168.1.34 or 216.45.34.234 and then bingo you should be on the internet.
Also check even though it is auto-configured the file in /etc/resolv.conf
Example:
# nano /etc/resolv.conf
This will show something similar to nameserver 234.123.121.123 and press ctrl and X to exit. Next is to make sure firefox runs and if not then check under the FILE part of firefox the work offline button need to be either on or off = on = preferred the page will load.

That should be it. Reload spritz / reopen it and run the update by clicking the orange rss reader type ican on the left then go to updated or installed or available + select and install.

Gnome full / select all dvd install = fastest install method will do about 192 packages to update with nothing added. "11 May 2009 GMT-7" openoffice is big and part of this so keep in mind if on slow or limited internet connection = unselect and only update what is needed.

Enjoy hope this helps.

Thanx for replies. I am connected to internet and firefox works. Equos also works. The gnome upper right icon shows connectionis on. In Slackware I did not use samba inetd and ssh so I uninstalled or commented out their lines in the /etc/rc.d files without losing internet connection. I want to do similar if I get pointers. To make SB more secure and leaner.
In SW12.2 I installed cups server. And SB show cupsd as default. But get network error when trying Entropy or getting to http://localhost:613 and terminal tells me to start cups. Spritz is only good for listing packages so I can use equo from terminal. My SB is current. Thanx again.

Cool.

rc.d wow that is a long long time ago think it changed about 1.5 years ago to "rc-update add sshd default" using openrc in gentoo and can also do the /etc/init.d/sshd restart or mess with /etc/conf.d/sshd as example.

Have you checked on /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
"opendns" this could help it get going if your ISP has a DUD / Lemon dns server setup and 90% of them do + can login to opendns and edit phishing filters and other firewall type to stop most problems.

Spritz is a bit confusing at first as you have to click the RSS orange wifi looking icon and "update" then click the top icon to see avaialble or click the installed etc then select and back to the left of the screen to the yellow traingle ! and select and problems = que all and lastly left CD icon and commit and finally it will say "all is fine baby nothing to do" or you can use text equo same same.

Spritz is actually very good can even add your forums login there and "user generate content" so packages for entropy tree , just stumbled onto that part and reading up on it now

Feel free to read up on most of this and make a customized method of doing this with correct commands for optimal experience.
