Documents on server not opening on double click [Solved]

Postby pvanthony » Fri May 08, 2009 10:17

Using the latest Sabayon Gnome 4.1 32bit. The Gnome version is 2.24.3.

Under Places > Connect to server, connecting to a smb server, the connection works and the files can be seen. Files can be saved to the server and copied from the server.

The problem is that files cannot be open from the server. We are not able to save to the server from an application. We can copy to the server but cannot save as to the server or open from with in the server.

Is there a configuration that has to be setup? Tried a Ubuntu live cd and it allows for files to be open from the same server.

Please advice on how to solve this issue.

Is the remote SMB server running Windows or Linux? Also, if you can open files on the remote SMB server when you booted your PC from an Ubuntu LiveCD, then I suggest that you look at the file /etc/samba/smb.conf file when you're running Ubuntu, and compare it with the one on your HDD when you're running Sabayon Linux.

The remote SMB server is running Gentoo Linux.

I never knew that /etc/samba/smb.conf on the Sabayon Desktop machine will affect the way files are opened on the remote SMB server. I will check both the files on Sabayon 4.1 Desktop and Ubuntu liveCD and report back.

Just compared both the smb.conf files. The one on Ubuntu and the one Sabayon desktop is very similar. Made the Sabayon look the same as the one on Ubuntu. Unfortunately files on the server are not able to open by double cliking.

I still have to copy the file to desktop, then open it by double clicking it.

Tried to open OpenOffice files and jpeg files from the server and does not work. OpenOffice starts then nothing happens. Gimp gives an error saying that the file does not exist.

I am supprised that I am the only one experiencing this problem.

It must be a configuration issue because on Ubuntu live cd it works great.

Please help to solve this issue.

Also checked with Sabayon 4.1 live CD. Same behaviour. Unable to open a OpenOffice or jpeg file on a remote smb server by double clicking.

Any suggestions.

A couple more things to try if you have not done them already:

a) Compare the version of Samba installed on your HDD under SL with the version on your Ubuntu LiveCD.

b) Check the version of net-fs/samba installed on your HDD and try different versions. I currently have version 3.0.33 installed and can open files on a Windows Vista SMB server (I don't have a Linux Samba server to try it with).

Setup sharing on a Windows XP machine. Then mounted the share on SL 4.1 through gnome. Double clicked a openoffice and a jpeg file and it still does not work. Do not have a Vista to try out.

Mounted the samba share by command line with the "nounix" option and the double click works.

Very strange that it does not work through gnome's "connect to server".

The version on the server is samba 3.0.33 same as the one on SL 4.1.

Did not check the version on ubuntu. Will check later.

Any other things to check?

I assume you're using Nautilus. I'm sure others will tell you different, but I had terrible trouble browsing Samba shares in Ubuntu using Nautilus, whereas Smb4K in Ubuntu worked a treat. You could try installing the package net-misc/smb4k to see if you have more luck opening the files. It's a KDE package but works under GNOME too (at least it did the last time I used it). There is a KDE 4.* version (0.10.2) in Entropy, but Entropy does not have the KDE 3.* versions 0.8.7 (stable) and 0.9.7, so you'll have to use Portage if you want to try either of those two versions.

EDIT: Also, have you see the following thread in the Ubuntu forums: OpenOffice cannot save/open files over network. It may give you some ideas. Amongst other things, it gives details of the method for mounting the share.

Tried Smb4K and it works great. Thank you for sharing this solution.

Once again thank you for sharing this.

By the way, the following config was needed on the samba server for my situation. Without this config line Smb4K crashed. Was using the 0.10.2 version of smb4K.

The line needed for smb.conf was "map to guest = bad user"
