no desktop load

Postby seven70 » Sun Apr 26, 2009 8:17

hey peoples new to sabayon, wanting to take advantage of 4.1 xbmc desktop but have come across a bit of problem...

checked out the live dvd, everything worked well & looked the goods. installed os with xbmc selected as the desktop, install very easily.

after install grub loads up, then nvidia splashscreen shows and then to a fuzzed up screen & hangs. if select the safe boot options, gets to a blank screen with flashing cursor and locks up.... this pc is kinda old, runs a msi board with 2200xp athlon and 1 gig of ram.

any ideas? first thought are the nvidia drivers, card is fx5500. anyway to install system without the drivers and try a manual driver install? common problem with this card or is related to something else?

cheers

I have not tried to install XBMC as a standalone desktop so I don't know if able to select Gnome at login
If you can then select Gnome by clicking on Session before you login

If Gnome works OK (no fuzzed up screen & hangs) then select XBMC Media Center from Applications - Sound & Video

If Gnome does not work then you will have a lot of reading to do,
viewtopic.php?f=86&t=16505

Apart from the above do a clean install and select Gnome desktop and make sure Gnome works OK, Log Out then select Sabayon Media Center by clicking on Session before you login

Only other thing I can offer is to install Sabayon 4.1 on one of the old systems I have laying around (going to do anyway) just to see if works.

Sorry I couldn't give more help

thanks joe,

pulled the fx5500 card & threw in an older ati 9250 pro and reinstalled with xbmc desktop - works a treat now but now dont have dvi connection only vga & svid.

will try reloading with gnome & fx5500 see if it changes anything, otherwise may have to do a spot of reading!

cheers

Live DVD would not run in 3D
I installed SL 4.1G on old P4 with fx5200 128mb would not run in 3D, updated system which install the 180 no luck with that driver, browsed forum found out have to use earlier driver for the fx5 cards, DVD loads the 173 and we know them problems, the ati 9000 series works OK on the wifes P4

Will fiddle around with later just, finished downloading SL 4.1K 64bit and I just have to install on my 64 bit systems
Have fun

Hi guys,

I have the same problem: then nvidia splashscreen shows and then to a fuzzed up screen & hangs. I tryied with Sabayon 4.1 kde (latest) on my laptop: Asus LG5000 that has a video card nvidia geforce fx go 5650.

I've noticed after the installation of Sabayon Linux that the installed nvidia drivers are: v.173.14.15 r10 but if I search on the nvidia official site for my video card, I see the v.173.14.18.

Perhaps I need to reinstall the video drivers? If so, how can I do that? Should I remove the old video card firs and then install the new ones?

Please, let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Have tried few different things (have not searched for previous drivers yet)

Can only get GUI working by disabling Enhanced Desktop Experience (Acceleration
Manager)

Will keep trying when I have more time

Work around do as seven70 has done (if possible replace card with one that
supports Enhanced Desktop out of the box)

Having fun

Sorry I haven't got back sooner been away for a few days.

I have searched high and low trying to find the post that suggested to downgrade
the drivers but just can't find that one (I should have copied and saved to hard
drive)

I have noticed that there are quite a number of people having issues with
their Video cards on Sabayon 4.1 mainly the newer ATI and older Nvidia

For the moment the only way I can get 3d working with the fx5200 card is to
install Sabayon 4-R1 which uses the 173.14.12 nvidia driver with the 2.6.27
kernel (and then not updating to the 2.6.29 kernel and latest nvidia drivers)

Yes I know this is not what we would like to have, lets hope that the issues
will be sorted out later

Video cards that I am having 3D issues with on Sabayon 4.1 out of the box, but
work with Sabayon 4-R1
Nvidia FX 5200 128MB
ATI X1650 512MB
(3D worked with SL 4-R1 Live DVD, no 3D after install but working after doing
post by micia Re: Howto ATI fix, have not tried to get working with SL 4.1 yet)

Not working for me with Sabayon 4-R1 and 4.1 out of the box
Intel 845 Brookvale Integrated (have not bothered to try and get working, just
replaced with ATI 9250)

Video cards that are working with 3D for me on Sabayon 4-R1 and 4.1 out of the
box are:
ATI 9250 128MB AGP
Intel 965 Express (HP C700 Notebook)
Nvidia GeForce6100 Integrated (motherboard ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus)
Nvidia EN8500 GT 1GB PCI Express (ASUS)

I have found that after using the cheap (new $82AU) ASUS EN8500 GT 1GB all the
other graphic cards I have are just to slow (and I thought the ATI X1650 512M
was great, not any more even the GeForce6100 is faster than the X1650)

Sorry I couldn't help you get your problem sorted out
Has been a good learning experience for me
Still having lots of fun
