Problem with GRUB

Postby eag1e » Sat Apr 25, 2009 22:08

First of all I have 2 HD's. Linux is installed on hdb1, so I asked Sabayan 4.0 installer to install GRUB on /dev/hdb1... Oops - I have seen that there was no ability to install it to MBR on hdb, only on MBR on hda that is not acceptable for me. So I installed it onto bootrecord hdb1. After installation I actually wasn't able to boot Linux, so I started grub from console:
Code: Select all
# grub
root (hd1,0)
setup (hd1)
quit
# init 6

Well, now I see, GRUB but nothing more - there was no menus to choose, only... GRUB> prompt... I'm a beginner and don't know how to manage it now by myself... :alien: Installing Linux without GRUB bootloader willn't help me too...

Betwix and between... Yes, I can start linux from SuperGrubDisk, but I still don't know how to do it directly from my HD. I have GRUB in my MBR, but I don't see the loader menu without SuperGrubDisk...
I tried to fix MBR as it shown in this guide http://www.supergrubdisk.org/wiki/Howto_Fix_Grub "Choose Language & HELP :-)))" and I have a result: it installed GRUB onto my hda!!! The worster thing it can do - there are Windows installed with recovery function, so I need this MBR unchanged :( Now I need to recover it back, of course. The only one thing I need is to be able to load GRUB from hdb directly and start Sabayon from there...

You modify the real_root=UUID.... with real_root=/dev/sdaX or hdaX with your real root partition.

Is there any particular reason you do not want to use grub to boot windows?
I mean it is possible to chainload grub from the windows boot loader but I don't really see the point.

I don't understand what you mean by "there are Windows installed with recovery function, so I need this MBR unchanged"
Do you have more than one windows install? You can still use grub to boot them

Anyway, gonna need some more info from you.

I need output of
"fdisk -l"
and
"blkid"
without quotes
and then is your windows; xp or vista? If, you still really want to use the windows boot loader.
