As root, enter the following command:

Code: Select all
hwinfo --framebuffer

and you'll see a list of modes that your hardware supports. Here's the output from my laptop (which does not support 1024x600):

The mode figure is hexadecimal, so you need to convert it to decimal and then use it in the vga= command in grub.conf. So look for the hexadecimal mode for 1024x600 when you enter the hwinfo --framebuffer command.

Great tip, very constructive. Sabayon community makes the difference in distro choice.

So back to my Asus... you know what's odd? here is the output :

# hwinfo --framebuffer
02: None 00.0: 11001 VESA Framebuffer
[Created at bios.450]
Unique ID: rdCR.il6towt04X5
Hardware Class: framebuffer
Model: "Intel(r) 82945GM Chipset Family Graphics Controller"
Vendor: "Intel Corporation"
Device: "Intel(r) 82945GM Chipset Family Graphics Controller"
SubVendor: "Intel(r) 82945GM Chipset Family Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS"
SubDevice:
Revision: "Hardware Version 0.0"
Memory Size: 7 MB + 704 kB
Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xd07affff (rw)
Mode 0x0312: 640x480 (+2560), 24 bits
Mode 0x0314: 800x600 (+1600), 16 bits
Mode 0x0315: 800x600 (+3200), 24 bits
Mode 0x0301: 640x480 (+640), 8 bits
Mode 0x0303: 800x600 (+832), 8 bits
Mode 0x0311: 640x480 (+1280), 16 bits
Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown

would you conclude 1024x600 is not supported? Thats odd because gnome does run in that resolution!

For the record :

I took my courage and set vga=788 in my grub.conf file (so 800x600)

the result : beautiful graphical boot!

THANKS EVERYBODY

Do your function keys that control the volume work?

Yes fc keys for volume work

I must say sabayon 4.1 is pretty much working out of the box on ASUS 1000HE (except for the graph boot, see above)

Just a note about the sound : be sure to level up the line out volume to get your speakers work to the max
