too many desktops installed!

Postby pkbest » Thu Apr 09, 2009 21:13

Ok, i downloaded the Sabayon DVD Iso, and installed sabayon 4 r1 x64 edition.

When i booted up, even tho i selected GNOME, it installed that, but when i booted up.. it went to KDE?
I know how to switch them so i did. but i noticed quite a few things. I had KDE. 3.5, XFCE, FLuxbox, Openbox? or something?(which starts and logs off immediately) i have Gnome of course, and then theres also Kde w/ Openbox, and Gnome with Openbox

so im confused on which ones to use i guess.. i mean i only want gnome installed. so being new to the package manager, i dont know how to uninstall. Im not going to lie.. ive been an Ubuntu user since about version 5.04 so Aptitude and Apt-get is all i know >_>. Gentoo never ran on my old laptop so i never got a chance to try anything gentoo based until i got this new laptop a year ago. It is a Asus G1S-A
2.2 Ghz COre 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram, 160 GB Hdd (thinking about upgrading....), 256 MB Nvidia 8600m GT.

I want to make sabayon absolutely go at its fastest so i want to remove FLuxbox, XFCE etc.. in Gnome i have WAY too many applications installed, since it has every desktop's apps installed.
What is the process to remove them without screwing something up? Im following the tut. right now from this area on what to do right after a fresh install... so ill check back here later.

lol sry, but one last question... is there an IRC channel for us Sabayon Users?

Sabayon install many desktops for the user may choose in the sessions...
i feel this!. i use sabayon mainly because this , because i like all graphical ambients.
Mandriva also have this feature. mandriva Free.
but if your sabayon installed GNOME, only if you wanted, it install KDE together, because KDE was marked to be installed.
XFCE, Fluxbox etc... LXDE, were installed as default.
if you want only GNOME, the more easy manner, in your installed system, ie to open spritz (the graphical package installer, the sabayon equivalent of synaptics) an Blue Star icon in desktop,
and choosing all the KDE packages, and all of xfce packages, flux box etc... marking these packages for uninstall...
etc... and remove then.

if you want only a sabayon installation, with only GNOME, you may try the Lite MCE, because is the sabayon only with gnome!,
and not the full 4.0.r1. you choosed the full Sabayon, with many graphical ambients!

Resuming:
Sabayon Lite MCE for only GNOME
Sabayon full r1 if you want several or all the graphical interfaces.
Sabayon have better than a common regular, IRC channel.

About using equo with --ask,
download size -> the package/s to be downloaded size
disk space used -> the size of installation
needed space -> total space needed. Sum of previous for a totally new package but much less if there is a previous version installed as the old installation will be removed.

If you find is showing weird numbers, please report, may be a bug.

Do you have latest entropy installed?

equo update && equo install entropy.
Ooh, and some games (if you have them installed) are as much as 700MB.

The iso is from January, but Linux is very fastly updated.
Sabayon is a Bleeding Edge Distro, it may have more than 100 updated packages a month.
Ii is no so an error.
if you dont want, you may not update fully.
update only the game that you need for example, and the system will install only this and the needed dependencies.

Now, if you want you may substitute the Lite, by the new versio 4.1 with GNOME. The KDE version brings in some days.
