Network share help

Hi guys,

I am new to this o/s and need some help regarding browsing to network shares.

I currently have a server running Windows Server 2008 on a domain with multiple shares that I need to access, the shares grant access to both domain accounts (which have full control) and anonymous accounts (which have read only).

I understand that the linux box will connect via Samba, but I am not entirely sure how to do this at all. If someone could give me detailed instructions or refer me to an external site which can help that would be great.

Not quite sure what you want to do, but I certainly do know the basics of samba.

Basic mounting of a share:

mount -t smbfs -o username=<name>,password=<pw> //<computer_name>/<share> </destination>

and just by googling around. As a warning, after you get beyond the generic windows shared files, printers, and the like and move into multiple domain management, networked user accounts, etc. you must leave the world of gui-based configurations and delve deep into config files to get samba working. It's not hard, just a bit unfamiliar.

Most users find all of samba they use has already been magically configured for them - all they have to do is use the "browse network" option on whatever file manager they happen to prefer.

I think Windows Server 2008 is like Vista as far as Samba is concerned, so you may find you have trouble with Samba authentication even if you have done everything correctly. If you do have trouble with authentication under Samba, you may need to use the Windows Server 2008 Security Policy Editor or edit the Windows Server 2008 Registry. I had trouble with Vista shares and printer sharing, even with SL 4.0-r1, until I edited the Vista Registry. The SL Wiki article HOWTO: Vista Printer Sharing gives the details of the Registry edits for Vista (all editions), and these may be the same for Windows Server 2008.
