Decent movie converter

Postby oomagoolies » Fri Apr 03, 2009 20:31

I'm a total newbie and not only that I'm new to the world of computers in general, but saying that I have progressed quickly through windows first then multiple distro's and now Sabayon which I quite like and have decided to stick with for now, but, I have just one thing missing, that is, a decent movie converter that will convert from any format to VCD, I currently use ultra avi on windows but can't get it to work with wine doors and until I either find a replacement or configure Ultra avi to work, then I keep going back to windows which sucks so Please some advice and/or a tutorial or (preferably) a good linux app to go with my brand new Sabayon4. Thankyou for whatever help in advance..

Video conversion is new to me too but I think that "ffmpeg" will do it. I'm sure someone will come along with more precise instructions but, as far as I can make out, you open a terminal and use this command:
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i myfile.avi -target vcd /tmp/vcd.mpg

I found that here: http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg-doc.html

If you use Firefox it may be worth checking out the "DownloadHelper" addon as that has a very good video converter.

thanks dunsurfin but that ffmpeg is something to play with as I am alittle baffled with all that and was hoping for something a little easier,... as for your command well it's worth a go and I'll let you know thanks.

One other little point that may help you get more answers is to create a new topic for a new problem.
If you start at the main page for this particular forum viewforum.php?f=86 and click on "NEWTOPIC" (just above announcements) you'll probably get more people reading your topic.

There's a programme called avidemux GTK that may fit the bill. I've just had a play with it and it converted an avi to vcd without any apparent problem. It's not a default programme in Sabayon but you can use the Spritz package manager to find it and install it.

Maybe he has to wait for the 4.1 cd version should be easiest to fix it from there and then wait with the hardware change if possible.

k9copy is in Entropy. Have you updated recently? I've just looked and I have it on my system (under "Multimedia) so you may well have it. If in doubt, open Spritz and search in "installed" packages.

Hey guys I feel your pain, I came over to Linux 4 years ago and had a hell of a time learning anything at all. ha ha. Any way the best program under linux for converting anything to anything really is "Devede" or "ManDvd" they are both graphical apps with user friendly gui's but if you want to get fancy than use "Mencoder" which is a command line app and in fact the back end of both apps I just mentioned.
