Usb sound card

Postby Jensdk » Tue Mar 24, 2009 22:06

Hi all

I am all new to Sabayon as well as linux at all so please forgive my stupidness :)
The problem is, I have a Behringer usb sound card. I use it as my primary sound card when I am at home, but when I go to school
I just lets it be on the table. When I ran windows i could just plug it in and the sound would automatically be redirected through the usb. This dosnt seem to be the case sabayon unfortunately.

I am running 4.0r1 64 bit version. and i also get a sound error message when i boot, but after i run alsaconf the integrated sound card works just fine.

Can anybody help?

thanks

the wonderful world of linux sound architecture can get a bit hairy once you have more than one card. PulseAudio supplies configuration files which you can manipulate to get your sound to use a non-standard system card, but it will be a quite unfamiliar process. You may however just get lucky. Open up kmix (or whatever mixer you use) and see if your card is recognized by the system. If it is, see if you can just raise the volume levels and set it as the default playback device. If it's not, run "sudo alsaconf" from a terminal, and that should quickly recognize your card.

If you still don't hear any sound but see that your card is indeed recognized (or at least think it is), then you probably have to make some sound server modifications. I'd say the easiest way to do this is with the jack audio connection kit, which is installed by default in sabayon but not the default audio server. You'll want to install qjackctl to manage it - use spritz to do this. Once you've got qjackctl installed, just run it, and you'll have a nice little dashboard with which you can configure all aspects of sound in your computer. Post back here if you want to go this route.
