good point, I've never tried to understand all the interpreted language issues, but there certainly have been some.

That should not be necessary unless you are installing something not in the sabayon weekly repository (in which case it may be necessary to use portage or even install from source).

Using the weekly repository and doing a weekly upgrade is all that is required as any package from the repository has all the update dependencies sorted so can be installed without fear.
