Gpu Detector may be removed from installed version, with nodeps option:

sudo equo rm --nodeps gpu-detector


Therefore, the new upgrades of the gpu-detector does not requires the new Kernel.
About the new Kernel, if you want,you may change it, the easier manner is using the kernel-switcher command.

I dont know new tutorial of the equo command, but man equo command give you all the options. Yes, do, equo is powerfull.
