Sulfur vs Rigo [Solved]

Postby B3rtm3n » Mon May 14, 2012 20:40

Could anyone tell me if Sulfur really is going to be dropped? I personally think Rigo is 20 steps back instead of 20 steps forward.

Sulfur does me remind of openSUSE package manager called Yast which in fact has plenty more options than Sulfur but at least you have options. Within Rigo you have nothing at all.

Rigo is just nice to have as an app on your Iphone of something like that, but not on a desktop as package manager.

Sometimes the wheel does not have to be reinvented. I think Sulfur is very good and if something more easy as package manager is required I think Software Center of Ubuntu is a good place to start and I prefer to have both co existed next to each other just like Synaptic is still available within Ubuntu.

Fabio is only one man. Sulfur has issues and is not perfect by any means. It is very slow and there isn't an easy way to fix that. I'm sure he has learned a lot from coding it and will take what he thinks is best and put it into Rigo.

He can't keep developing everything. Sulfur isn't being 'dropped' per se, but he isn't focusing on making sure it stays compatible. Anybody could decide to take that work upon themselves and keep it going though.

I think Rigo is a great idea. Any time someone wants to install a package, they typically do a search on the internet first to find out what to install. Rigo is taking that search and putting it right into the application. That is what the vast majority of people want out of their package management application.

But, nobody is saying that will fit what everybody wants and nobody is stopping others from maintaining sulfur (that I know of). He's just going to be developing Rigo and advancing it. It is definitely still in it's early stages, so I'm excited to see where it will be in 6 months.

If only 1 man is doing it all I understand but I believe it is still a pity.

I like the back up tool being offered in Sulfur, but I learned that

Code: Select all
equo database backup

would do the same.

Is it correct that

Code: Select all
equo database resurrect

will restore the installed packages?

Also, in which folder is the back up being located, I want to make a copy in case my system crashes and I have to reinstall I just have to put it in the folder and run equo database resurrect

The package database is stored in:
/var/lib/entropy/client/database/amd64/entropy_backup___system__..............backup.bz2
and
Code: Select all
equo database resurrect

indeed restores .
It still works, but those commands are depreciated.
instead, use
Code: Select all
equo rescue backup

and
Code: Select all
equo rescue restore

if in doubt, read:
Code: Select all
equo rescue --help

Let me shed some light on the matter.
Sulfur has been moved to a separate git repository, entering in maintenance-only mode. No more active development will be done on it, but just bug fixes and API updates to keep it up with newer Entropy Library releases.

Otoh, I am fully committed to improve Rigo now and I am willing to implement more features as users request them. However, I am not going to port all of them from Sulfur, but just the most used.

If you would like to see a particular feature in Rigo, please use the Feature Request form available at our Bugzilla.

So Sulfur will still be available and maintained for current and future packages but no longer further developed if I understand.

Is this correct?

btw
- I noticed that Rigo has packages available that Sulfur does not like Skype.

- I do not like the fact you can not browse software with Rigo like you could with Sulfur
still think Ubuntu Sotware center (see pic in link below should be the standard layout)

This I checked and can say it's not correct, I can find Skype in both, rigo and sulfur.

Can you post the url to the git repo? Is it on github?
