I checked on the NVIDIA site and nvidia-drivers-260.19.* is definitely the correct driver for the ION in my nettop.
I have nvidia-drivers-260.19.29#2.6.38-sabayon installed and it works with Fluxbox (I'm typing this in Firefox 4 running under Fluxbox now), so the problem is not the video driver. X windows must be working (and hence the video driver) or I would not be able to see and use Firefox and the rest of the Fluxbox window manager. I can even run XBMC.
So I reckon the problem is with either KDE 4.6.1 or with the linux-sabayon-2.6.38-r1 kernel, or an incompatibility between them (perhaps they just need to be re-compiled). Yesterday I did
equo update,
equo upgrade and
equo conf update to roll to the latest packages in the Entropy repository. That ran to completion successfully, but the same problem occurred as in my first post: kernel oops and KDE Plasma Desktop crash (segfault). One of the error messages on the console (Ctrl-Alt-F12) told me that the KDE Plasma Desktop was "tainted" and missing OEM data. Hence my suspicion that there is some problem with either the kernel or Plasma Desktop, and not the video driver. Anyway, I have kicked off another
equo update and
equo upgrade and, as I type this, 264 packages (mostly KDE 4.6.1) are being re-downloaded, so my
guess is that they have been re-compiled by
joost. I could be wrong of course, but I can't see another reason why essentially the whole of KDE 4.6.1 would be re-downloaded after I upgraded to it yesterday. I can carry on with Fluxbox for a while on this machine (I can still run XBMC on it, too) and wait to see what the problem is with KDE and/or the kernel.
