aticonfig reports no supported adapters after update Spritz

Hello,

I just recently ran an system-wide updated via Spritz (updating equo/entropy first), but after I rebooted, none of my video was working (except for basic framebuffer Linux console).

I've got some output below, does anybody know why my ATI graphics card would just disappear after an update? It looks like it doesn't exist in /proc/bus/pci/devices, which I found after running 'strace -vvv -f -o aticonfig.out aticonfig --initial'. What's more peculiar, is that 'aticonfig --initial' was run after I did 'modprobe drm' and 'modprobe radeon', both of which loaded fine. I also noticed that my kernel was upgraded (built on 3/24/2009), even though I had already been running 2.6.28.

Hi,
It looks like you have ati mobility radeon x1400, and you are using fglrx, but it is possible that the latest fglrx driver 8.600 doesn't support your graphic card.
But I am not sure, so maybe someone to confirm or deny?

That is correct, it is the Mobility Radeon x1400. That seems a bit counterintuitive though, this laptop has been around since 2007 (I think), so it's not that old (barely 2 years). Why would ATI remove those drivers? Is there a way I can backrev to a ati-drivers package that still has my chipset in it, and block ati-drivers from future updates?

For what it's worth, even if I boot into the 2.6.27 Sabayon kernel (which has ati-drivers-8.552-r11), I still get 'no supported adapters' from 'aticonfig --initial'.

For anybody interested, I may have found a solution (if you can call it that), and it did involve downgrading my ati-drivers package.

I did a search using equo, and noticed that ati-drivers-8.552-r11 was available for downgrade, so I did this:

After installing that version, I restored my backed up (and working) xorg.conf with fglrx enabled, and rebooted. I can get into KDE 3.5, but whenever I try to boot KDE 4.2.1, I get Plasma segfaults and a black screen. I guess this is as good as it gets for my "old" laptop .

the problem happens after a world update on monday evening, here the equo.log from monday: http://pastebin.com/f4f1a1a5d (with 2.6.28|6 and ati-drivers 8.600)

the 2.6.28|6 doesn't fix the problem

today I have also tried to install the new 2.6.29 (with drivers) or install the ati-drivers for the old 2.6.27 but nothing happens

It's a really big problem, I'm not alone, other 3 users of sabayonmania and another user in the italian shed

Yeah, looks like that is the culprit. I switched to 'radeonhd' drivers and disabled all OpenGL stuff, and now the system is much happier. Granted, I don't have any effects, but that's a small price to pay for a stable system. I may eventually switch back to the older ati-drivers, but I'm not sure. Thanks everyone for your help.

thats stupid... i have ATI RADEON X850 XT, and now have to use the old x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.582-r10...
so is there a way to tell entropy to NOT update a package when doing "equo world"?

also wouldn't it be a good idea too have a x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.582-r10#2.6.29-sabayon ?? cause right now there is only the 8.600 for the newest kernel...
