.deb .rpm packages cant be installed on sabayon?

Postby bennykun » Wed Nov 12, 2008 0:16

Hi everyone!

I'm kind of a newbie with linux (i have little experience with kubuntu and opensuse) , i installed Sabayon a week ago and I am completly hooked to it (just wonder why didnt i quit windows for Linux before!!).. My only complain is about Spritz that keep bugging (or maybe just cause i dont know how to use it!) and after searching though Spritz some program i would like to installed that they werent available or were outdated versions (by exemple Avg for linux or firefox 3.0.3) and when i download packages from internet (*.deb or *-rpm) i find no way to install them i even tried emerge on a console ..didnt work neither.
I dont remember to have such difficulties with kubuntu or suse.
Is there a way to do it?

Thanks you in advance for your help. ( i tried to find the way to do it by myself and dont bother you online but i failed  )

Ben.

you should probably start by reading our wiki on the package managers and how to use them.

Gentoo uses .ebuilds, using .dep and .rpm are the very last resort. You would use source before them even. It's very very rare that you will ever need to do such a thing.

If you don't understand portage than you should stick with entropy and wait for packages to come available. If you don't watch what you are doing, you will break the system easily. There is a learning curve to using gentoo based distros.

Best advice:
Use it as is and learn your way around - the Sabayon Linux wiki and Gentoo docs are plentiful -- viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1730 It's vital that you learn the package manager before you break it.
