why is portage required for spritz auto-update?

I have portage masked in /etc/entropy/package/package.mask because entropy is always trying to downgrade it (also recommended in this post). I use portage for a couple of packages that don't work right in entropy, so I don't want it downgraded. But when I run the entropy update from the update applet, it tells me that portage must be unmasked to continue. Any ideas why?

+1 on that one. equo's working fine while spritz saying that portage needs to be unmasked when trying to download some packages. V .20.2 of course
