Software Update

Postby ssadhale » Wed Aug 20, 2008 0:10

Hi, I installed Sabayon 3.5 using live DVD on my Dell Inspiron 9400 machine - Core 2 Duo 1.73 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard drive.
After installation i immediately got a notification that i have 194 updates available. I started those updates using the Spritz package manager - which ran for almost 1 and half day. Not sure why it took so long. And after updates were done - the Spritz package manager just froze and didnt do anything. I had to hard boot the machine. Please note that my machine was responsive all this while - even while the updates were being installed, or when Spritz froze after all the updates were done. When my machine rebooted - i saw an additional entry in my boot loader - that was for the new kernel version. Not sure why that would happen - ideally it should have updated my existing entry right? And when I selected the new version - the system booted after a small pause. And i can use the system now. I would like to know the reasons behind all the things I observed and would like to know if i have done anything wrongly or did I miss something altogether or I should have done things differently.
Many thanks in advance.

so you wanted grub to over write your existing entry and than if your new kernel fails to load you have no way to revert back to your existing kernel to be able to fix things???????

Oh I see your point. And now I see the reason for creating another entry. But that isnt so much of a problem. I could live with multiple entries in the boot loader menu. But my actual problem is the utter slowness of the update process and Spritz freezing at the end of the upgrade. Any ideas why that happened?

Many thanks in advance.
