Sabayon self destruct!

Oh well thunderbird is now the least of my probems, looks like the password word file has got scrambled as none of my logins will work (not even root!)
Any idea as how to get my system back without starting from scratch?

boot from live dvd and then chroot on the hd installation then remove root entry from /etc/shadow
and finally type passwd and reset the new passoword for root
