Thunderbird problems

Postby davkt » Wed Jun 27, 2007 18:01

Hi All,
Anyone come across this problem before (or better still a fix!).
Thunderbird has been working quite happily on this system for ages but starting yesterday every time it opens a message or I click on one to view it in the preview panel Thunderbird shuts down.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
David

What version of Thunderbird? and do you have any plugins installed for it? Some of them do this when used with other ones... so if you have any plugins or themes, disable them, and enable them one by one.. might help figure outif there is a corrupt plugin, or if its thunderbird itself..

i had exactly the same problem when I upgrade from Thunderbird 1.5(?) to version 2, when I installed Sabayon 3.4 loop2. I had backed up my Thunderbird settings and then copied them back after the upgrade. It seemed that something I had set up in V1.5 (email rules?) wasn't compatible with V2. The solution was to delete the hidden file (.thunderbird) in my /home folder and restart Thunderbird.
Seems a bit drastic but if you backup .thunderbird first you can copy back the sub-folders one at a time to get your messages etc back.
However, I have found that Thunderbird 2 is more than a little unstable and the Spam filters don't work as well as they should. For that reason, and others, I have changed over to Kmail. It is not as flash as Thunderbird but it works.

Thanks, I'll try those once I've got the system back up as it seems to have forgotten all my logon details now!

This is strange because, on my laptop, Thunderbird 2 is very stable and the spam filtering works well. I have the mail files stored on my Windows XP partition and Thunderbird 2 installed under both SL and Windows XP, and both work equally reliably. I have been using Thunderbird 2 under SL 3.3 and 3.4 Loop 2b without any problems.

Fitzcarraldo,
Are you using the default adress for messages dirs (under /home/.thunder......)?

I use tbird in 2 Sabayon (3.3 full and mini), both using the same directory in a special partition for my work files, not the default under /home.

Till yesterday, everytime I change a message from inbox to any folder, I miss it. It simply disapeer!
Can you, or someone , help me?

Oi flon, tudo bem? Que tal o jogo ontem? Great result for Brazil, não é? :-)

Anyway, in answer to your question, no, I'm not using the default directory for the messages. I have them stored on a FAT32 partition which has Windows XP installed on it, so that I can send and receive mail seamlessly under Windows XP and SL using the same files. You can read how I set it up in the SL Wiki:

http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index. ... al_boot_PC

Since installing Thunderbird 2.0.0.0 under SL 3.3 x86-64 I have installed 3.4 Loop 2b x86-64 without problems and copied the directory .thunderbird that I backed up under SL 3.3 to an external USB HDD to my new home directory under 3.4 loop 2b, and then upgraded Thunderbird from 2.0.0.0 to 2.0.0.4 also without problems.

When I first installed Thunderbird I got it working for my POP3 mail account first and then later installed the WebMail extensions for Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. I had to do a little editing in one or two files under the Thunderbird folder in the Windows XP partition for those too. I cannot remember exactly what I did, but it was something like this:

1) installed the Webmail extensions for SL Thunderbird;
2) set-up and configured in SL Thunderbird the Webmail accounts;
3) installed the Webmail extensions for Windows Thunderbird;
4) copied some SL files across from the hidden ~/.thunderbird directory and its subdirectory to the corresponding Thunderbird folder and subfolder in the Windows partition;
5) edited the Linux paths to Windows paths.

I cannot remember precisely which files I copied and edited, but it was not many and it was not too difficult to deduce which ones to copy and edit. I copied the extensions folders from the SL extensions directory to the equivalent Windows folder (...\Profiles\o6wzbdjb.default\extensions in my case) and I might have edited the file extensions.ini and one or two other files in the Windows partition but cannot remember. I copied the SL file prefs.js across to overwrite the Windows file prefs.js, and edited it to change the Linux path format to Windows path format.

Fitzcarraldo, I suspect you understand amazonic, tupiportuguese quite well. :wink:

Bom, então...
Resultado do jogo foi uma surpresa geral! Uma florestinha de gols, aquele 3 x 0 !

and...
I searched for these wiki-infos at the wrong places, here at the forum and at the thunderbird site!
Despite I'm not using w-xp, maybe something will be usefull!

Very Obrigado!
