can't get DVDs to work with Totem or SMplayer

Totem used to work great for DVDs, but when I tried it today it gave me a fault saying "The stream is in the wrong format" and wouldn't play anything. It can play other video files, but not DVDs.

I also tried running it in SMplayer. I am able to select things in the "Title Menu", but the problem is it will not play smoothly - it gets stuck at the end of every "chapter". I can get into the chapter menu, and select the next scene, but then it just gets stuck as soon as that scene is over.

VLC plays DVD without any issue.

So it is definitely some software issue with either Totem or Gstreamer or something that is causing it to not work all of a sudden.

Does anyone else have this problem and/or know how to fix it?

One thing I wanted to try to do is install an older version of Totem to see if it works, but I don't know how to do that. I can only download/install the latest build from Entropy...

which media-libs/gstreamer package you have installed? If I understand right, you need media-libs/gstreamer-1.0.5

I have Gstreamer 1.0.5 installed and Gstreamer 0.10.36, as well as most of the major plug-ins
