Significant noise in multiple apps with kernel 3.6 [Solved]

Postby aquarius » Mon Oct 29, 2012 18:22

Hi,

after upgrade to kernel 3.6 something is wrong with the sound. Namely there is significant noise in multiple applications.
Affected applications: vlc, skype, xnoise.
Not-affected applications: xbmc, flash, wine.
Switching back to kernel 3.5 resolves the problem.

I have 2 sound "cards" in my laptop.
According to alsamixer they are: HDA Intel PCH (primary) and HDA Nvidia (probably on GPU with HDMI output).
According to lspci:
Code: Select all
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

I'm using only Intel's one.

So, I assume the noise is a kind of kernel/alsa+kernel issue.
Is there any solution for it?
Or maybe I should report a bug?

Thanks in advance

I've checked e17 amd64 daily iso. It comes with kernel 3.6. And there is no noise in vlc and other apps.
Same kernel, same architecture, same VM, same apps... Why live CD (daily iso) is fine, and my installation is not :?:

Upgrade to linux-sabayon-3.6-r3 fixed the problem.
Marking as solved.

I have exactly the same problem. Running the latest Sabayon 10 KDE iso with kernel 3.5-r7.
Noise lasts about 10 to 20 seconds when I start a video with VLC. Haven't noticed it in other apps yet.

Could be a problem with the Intel sound card driver, I have the following sound card:
Code: Select all
Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

Will try upgrade to 3.6-r3 to see if it fixes the problem.

Edit: Still annoying noise when starting to watch a video in VLC after kernel upgrade...

Tried to get some workarounds for the problem, ended up disabling my whole sound card, and then destroyed my installation by trying to uninstall pulseaudio. Never try that!

After a re-install from the original live dvd I used last time, and for as far as I know no different setup choices all seems fixed. Clueless but happy.
