VLC & SMPlayer Audio Gone – Amarok-YouTube-Clementine OK

Two days ago I opened vlc to play an mp4 audio/video file, it worked for about 3 sec. And then mysteriously the audio output just stopped. With vlc, the file is playing, there is progress in the time bar, I can get video, but no audio.

Amarok plays mp3s fine, with data display, and appears normal

Clementine plays ok (audio from both mp3 and mp4 files works).

SMPlayer app opens but won't play anything (no mp4, no flv), no audio and no video(?).

I have opened alsamixer in yakuake terminal and reset it to the nvidia/conexant card many times trying to debug this (each time I go back in it is back to PulseAudio, but doesn't work either way), and made sure nothing is muted (except it continues to reset s/pdif to 'mm', but I don't believe I have digital anyway.

Current settings in the kmix mixer are basic, and I really never touch them:

Playback and capture show only 'built in audio analog stereo' as an option.

In the 'Audio Setup' I have alternated GStreamer and vlc as the phonon preference in the Backend tab, when the problem started it was set to GStreamer and this has seemed to make no difference either way.

PulseAudio Sound Server is the only option in Phonon for Device Preference playback (and almost everything else as well), Audio Hardware Setup tab has 'Analog Stereo Duplex' and 'Built-in Audio Analog Stereo' selected.

And, for some reason, now when I plug in headphones to the mini-jack, they don't silence the laptop's speakers (but the phones do work) – I have to manually select 'headphones' in the Phonon 'Connector' Audio Hardware Setup tab dropdown to kill the speakers.

I really do not recall if there were any updates prior to using vlc since the last time, I may have updated to KDE 4.8.4 with that week's batch of other included updates in between vlc uses, but I can't be sure.

I reset all prefs in vlc to default settings (which is basically where they were before, not really customized) with no effect. Also reinstalled vlc and phonon-vlc. When I ran kbuildsycoca4 afterward I got a strange output, though:

To sum up - -

Not working (AFAIK): vlc audio output (video ok), SMPlayer (audio & video both not working), downloaded .flv, mp4, etc. files (video, yes – audio, no)

I have looked at a lot of threads and noted the post by Richlion in this recent one (http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=25647) but as it wasn't answered and the thread is marked [Solved] I though I'd start this one. I have looked both here and Googling, but didn't see my combination of issues – any ideas or threads I missed?

Do you have pavucontrol installed and verify the apps are using the correct hardware? Seems strange at some work and some don't. Fire up SMPlayer and get it going and than look in pavucontrol to see settings.

I started SMPlayer with an mp4 file (video is working with the mp4, not with an flv, but still no audio), then I checked in pavucontrol.
In the “Playback” tab there is only one mono bar designated System Settings, with no meter level reading.
In the “Output Devices” there is a stereo bar set called Built-In Audio Analog Stereo with the dropdown for either speakers or headphones, with no reading in the level bar.
“Input Devices” has Built-In Audio Analog Stereo, Analog Input designation, with a stereo set, and a 15% or so level moving, which seems to be picking up the ambient room noise on the open mic on the laptop and nothing else.
“Configuration” profile is set to Analog Duplex.

No other devices or bar sets show, and I know I have seen more than that before. Seems like something is not registering, what I'm not exactly sure, nor am I sure how to get it back.

Have you checked System Settings > Mutlimedia > Phonon > Audio Hardware Setup? Make sure you have the correct hardware profile selected.

Another thing to check is System Settings > Mutlimedia > Phonon > Backend. You could try changing to the VLC backend (media-libs/phonon-vlc) or, if you're already using that, the GStreamer backend (media-libs/phonon-gstreamer) instead. Thanks for your settings, Fitzcarraldo.

I looked at the System Settings > Mutlimedia > Phonon > Audio Hardware Setup and Backend settings - they seem the same as when I accessed them in the Phonon window, through what I had called the "kmix > mixer" settings method, and are still set as mentioned above in my first post. I still can't see anything wrong with them, but if there is another selection I should try (I have tried most all of them, I think) I'll give that a go.

I had gstreamer as preferred in Backend, so I swapped it again for vlc, but still no luck.

As for the packages lists, I ran the two eix commands, which I'll post here:

For the eix of the gstreamer plugins, it looks like I am missing your media-plugins/gst-plugins-faac, -gconf, -gl, -jpeg, -libpng, and I have -libmms, which I do not see in your list.

I'm not sure if the mismatches matter - if I need any or all of them, do I just equo-install them from the repositories? All, or one at a time to debug? O can it be something else?

I still have not touched the settings again in vlc since I reset them to defaults, and they worked before in a default configuration.

Notice that you have the vlc USE flag switched off in your phonon package, whereas I have it turned on. The vlc USE flag is used in the phonon ebuild to build the VLC Phonon backend. But, according to the eix output you posted, you have that installed.

As you have audio working on Amarok, YouTube and Clementine, I assume your audio infrastructure is actually working correctly and your problem lies with a missing plugin/codec for the type of audio you are trying to play in VLC and SMPlayer. The media-plugins/gst-plugins-faac looks like a possible candidate if you are using the GStreamer Phonon backend. Try installing that.

I installed media-plugins/gst-plugins-faac, as well as all the other plugins you had and I did not. I installed them one at a time, and opened vlc and SMPlayer with an mp4 file (that did work before...) after each installation from the plugin list. Video is fine in both, still no audio in either one.

I took a look at the Tools > Codec Information in vlc while the mp4 was playing, just to see, and in the various tabs for the audio data I have this:

Or, and I'm really just guessing here, it seems like sometimes with certain issues, that deleting and recreating some kde prefs, hidden directories &/or settings can help. Is anything like that worth pursuing?

Still have had no luck, but I took a snapshot of a log (Tools > Messages, set to level 2-debug) while vlc was playing an mp4 file - it does have some errors throughout but I don't know how to interpret them to see what I am missing, or has corrupted. Most of it may well be repetitive, but perhaps there is a clue in there somewhere; I just haven't found it yet.

Hi there,

this is a bit frustrating. VLC has not had any sound despite 3-4 weeks worth of updates on SL.
I don't want to tweak the system, only if I really have to.
From my console this is what comes up upon launching VLC:

Some poeple have VLC fixed. On my configuration SMPlayer so far works, but it simply lacks the functionality.
The side effect is also that after I close VLC I cannot communicate via Skype, I get disconnected without knowing it, I have to reboot the system. In some way VLC is interfering with parts of the system.
Is there any other type of logging we can do to find out what the problems are?

On the other hand also colours are a total crap when viewing movie content in a web browser, both with Firefox and Chromuim. The content is filled with blue, especially faces.
