lost sound in Thunderbird 11.0.1 [Solved]

Postby dunsurfin » Tue Apr 24, 2012 20:59

The large updates yesterday and today, including Thunderbird 11.0.1, have meant that Thunderbird has lost it's sound again. The PC speaker just beeps on all settings. I tried installing thunderbird-bin 11.0 but that had also lost the sound. Thunderbird 11.0 worked with no problem before the updates so I suspect that something else is to blame. I have no idea where to start looking. :(

I shall not mark this solved as I have no idea what caused it but I had done a re-install on my girlfriends machine (SLK amd64) and her Thunderbird did not lose it's sound. Mine was lost on 3 separate machines 2 SLk x86 and one SLK amd64) so I did a reinstall on one and got the Thunderbird sound back. I'm now in the process of reinstalling the other two.

It's beyond a joke, really, isn't it? The Thunderbird notification sound hokey cokey. The problem is down to Mozilla. Apparently they've fixed it (again) in Thunderbird 12: see Comment #57 in Mozilla Bugzilla Bug Report No. 635918 - Does not play user defined sound for incoming mail.

My apologies; I should have kept this thread up to date with what happened on my machines.

I reinstalled SLK 8 on 4 machines (2 x86 and 2 amd64 - one of the amd64 belongs to my girlfriend) and, after 500 or so updates, they are all working perfectly with Thunderbird 11.0.1 happily giggling away (yes; I do actually have a giggle.wav).

So the problem was not with Thunderbird as such but with something on the machines. My gut feeling is that it has something to do with the upgrade problem of a few days ago.

There is a remote possibility that it's connected with kernel 3.3. I haven't switched kernels yet on the re-installs so am running 3.2 and will update to 3.3 today and see what happens. As an aside; I'm happy to report that all the installs went very well except for the resolution problem on the Dell Studio - I knew what to do this time so just installed and then edited xorg.conf vertical refresh from 60 to 61.

I'm marking the thread solved because there isn't any way to reproduce the fault now.

Edit; switching to kernel 3.3.0 has made no difference - everything works.

I've removed the "solved" and will wait for Thunderbird 12. I foolishly believed that my new installation and upgrades had given me an up to date system but they hadn't. Because they are just pointed at sabayon-weekly they only upgraded as far as last weekend and I have just found that I have Thunderbird 11.0 installed. So it is a Thunderbird issue after all. I shall just miss out this week's updates and wait until Thunderbird 12 is out.

I installed Thunderbird 12.0.1 yesterday and can confirm that user-specified sound files for notification of new e-mails is working again. Hopefully the Mozilla developers have fixed it for good this time.

Thank you, is it now in portage? If so, I shall emerge it rather than waiting.

Thank you. I have installed it and have my sound back. :) I'd forgotten how long it took to emerge thunderbird and left it chugging away overnight.
The few days of using 11.0.1 gave me a chance to try kmail, evolution, claws and balsa - they are all inferior for my uses so I hope Mozilla don't break it again.
