SL7 - cannot play .rm files any more! [Solved]

Hello,

I've got VLC and Kaffeine on my SL7 system. I know in the past I had to install Real Player to view .rm files, but VLC could play those files too in SL version 5. What has changed? Is there another media player that can be installed via Sulfur that can play those files?

^I don't have win32codecs installed (it's not possible for the 64-bit version of VLC in any case) and yet I can play in VLC the following .rm file (I'm finding it difficult to find examples on the Web of .rm files) that I downloaded:

So the first thing the OP needs to check is whether ffmpeg is installed and what USE flags are set (see the eix output above for the USE flags that are set on my machine).


BTW, although not pertinent to .rm files, if someone using 64-bit Linux does need to play files that require win32codecs (e.g. .wmv files encoded using the MSS2 codec), it is possible to do so by using SMPlayer for Windows in WINE (see How to play MSS2 codec (Windows Media Video 9 Screen) .wmv files in 64-bit Linux).

Use SMplayer for linux. He will be play .rm.
Im' using without problems, SMplayer is much better than VLC in my opinion.

what about w64codecs? There are 64 bit Windows codecs out there as Debian multimedia repo has w64codecs package. Should there be a similar package ported over to sabayon?

If you're referring to the OP's question regarding VLC and .rm files, win32codecs (and win64codecs) are a red herring. For VLC to play .rm (RealMedia) files it uses ffmpeg. Nothing to do with win32codecs or win64codecs. As I mentioned, those .rm files that I can find on the Web do play in VLC on my 64-bit installation with 64-bit VLC and I don't have the win32codecs package installed nor the win32codecs USE flag enabled in VLC (which would not work in any case for 64-bit VLC). There is no win64codecs USE flag for VLC (see the eix output I posted earlier). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RealAudio for further details.

However, if you're referring to my aside about users of 64-bit Linux who need to play files that require win32codecs (e.g. .wmv files encoded using the MSS2 codec), then, no, there is no win64codecs package in Gentoo/Sabayon Linux. However there is a package amd64codecs from the MPlayer developer, but that is masked in Portage, presumably because it doesn't work properly or is obsolete:
