I just did a fresh install of Sabayon 6 Gnome. The disk had gnome 2.3 on it. After updates it was Gnome 3 in fallback mode saying my hardware didn't support Gnome3.
I installed gnome-shell and couldn't log in.Uninstalled gnome-shell and checked to see if gnome3 base was installed. It said it wasn't. Installed all of gnome 3 and logged into gnome shell successfully.
Just writing this to inform others what to look for.

What video card? is a known bug with ati and gnome-shell, believe is one reason sabayon does not ship with gnome-shell.
If you have nvidia or intel gpu, can probably get it to work.
