Firefox binaries - user agent string

Postby tekwyzrd » Mon May 19, 2008 19:54

I have been watching the droping position of Sabayon at distrowatch and thanks to their ubuntu suckup attitude I see what is contributing to the problem. Quite simply it is the generic user agent string that's used by binary Firefox and it's derivates. I've been using Swiftfox. The default user agent string is:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071201 Firefox/2.0.0.11 (Swiftfox) - Build ID: 0000000000

With the help of info on:

http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2004/04/24/c ... agent.html

enter about:config in address bar
right click and select add string
name it general.useragent.override
I'm running Sabayon 3.4f so I gave it a value of:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071201 SabayonLinux/3.4f Firefox/2.0.0.11 (Swiftfox)

hopefully my visits to distrowatch will now be counted in Sabayon's hit count.

I have come to the conclusion that the poll on DW is unethical. People are cheating with it and is not a true measure as to what distro you should be using. It's all about quality and community.
