SMplayer troubles

Postby chickpea » Mon Feb 04, 2008 3:04

I just did a large world update, and even after running revdep-rebuild -X it still doesn't work. It runs fine, but it won't play any videos.
I can run mplayer just fine, but SMplayer doesn't want to play nice. I've rebuilt it again, but still no dice.

here is what konsole says when run from a terminal:

Anything stand out to anyone? Mplayer crashed there in the middle, but it seems to work fine, just Mplayer. :(

Re: SMplayer troubles

Postby Fitzcarraldo » Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:02

smplayer-0.5.50 comes installed with SL 3.4f, and the ebuild was in the SL overlay because an ebuild for SMPlayer was not in the Portage repo. However, I discovered yesterday that the smplayer-0.5.62 ebuild has recently been added to the Portage repo., so the available versions are now:

# eix smplayer
[I] media-video/smplayer
Available versions: (~)0.5.59[1] (~)0.5.62 {linguas_bg linguas_cs linguas_de linguas_en_US linguas_es linguas_fr linguas_hu linguas_it linguas_ja linguas_ka linguas_nl linguas_pl linguas_pt_BR linguas_pt_PT linguas_ro linguas_ru linguas_sk linguas_sr linguas_sv linguas_tr linguas_uk linguas_zh_CN linguas_zh_TW}
Installed versions: 0.5.62(21:32:18 05/02/08)(-linguas_bg -linguas_cs -linguas_de -linguas_en_US -linguas_es -linguas_fr -linguas_hu -linguas_it -linguas_ja -linguas_ka -linguas_nl -linguas_pl -linguas_pt_BR -linguas_pt_PT -linguas_ro -linguas_ru -linguas_sk -linguas_sr -linguas_sv -linguas_tr -linguas_uk -linguas_zh_CN -linguas_zh_TW)
Homepage: http://smplayer.sourceforge.net
Description: Great front-end for mplayer written in Qt4

[1] "sabayon" /usr/portage/local/layman/sabayon

As shown above, the ebuild for smplayer-0.5.59 is in the SL overlay, whereas the ebuild for smplayer-0.5.62 is in the Portage tree.

Anyway, I just did an "emerge -1v smplayer" to get rid of smplayer-0.5.50 and install smplayer-0.5.62.

However, when I ran the new version of SMPlayer and tried to play a DivX video, nothing was displayed and the message displayed in a Terminal window was along the lines of:

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: init_video_filters
ID_SIGNAL=11
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

But yet the video plays fine if I use MPlayer! So I thought something strange was going on with SMPlayer, which is just a front-end to MPlayer. I solved it just be doing a little configuring of SMPlayer:

1. 'Options > Preferences', clicked on the 'General' tab and I cleared the box 'Folder for storing screenshots:' (it did have "/home/fitzcarraldo/.smplayer/screenshots" in it) and clicked on 'Apply'.

2. 'Options > Preferences', clicked on the 'General' tab and I selected the Output drivers | Video as "x11" and clicked on 'Apply'.

3. 'Options > View info and properties...', clicked on 'Demuxer' tab and selected 'avi - AVI demuxer (AVI files, including non interleaved files)' and clicked on 'Apply'.

4. 'Options > View info and properties...', clicked on 'Video_codec' tab and select 'ffodivx - FFmpeg MPEG-4 [mpeg4]' and clicked on 'Apply'.

5. 'Options > View info and properties...', clicked on 'Audio_codec' tab and selected 'mp3 - mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3' and clicked on 'Apply'.

And now the new version of SMPlayer plays all my DivX files.

Thanks fitz. I'll see if this solves my issues as well. I also installed the portage smplayer, not the SL overlay version. Which has lead to these issues. So it seems to be the same issue you experienced.

Will report back.
