Installing and Configuring QNext For a Linux Newbie [Solved]

Postby Ookami » Wed Jan 23, 2008 7:27

Hey there, I've been using Sabayon for close to a year now, on and off (I switched back to Windows for a while for no reason) and I still consider myself a newbie at Linux. The reason being, I find it incredibly difficult to install software...

Recently, I came across an instant messaging client that caught my eye due to its beauty and style. And, naturally, I wanted to install this program. Following the instructions given in the website, I've managed to unpack the .tar.bz2 file (however, unpacking the .tar resulted in a "lone zero" or something to that effect... I don't remember exactly, and have no idea if this is the cause of the problem I'm having) and loaded the program (through the ./qnext command).

However, on loading the program, it comes across a connection error, and prompts me to configure my connection. The "Automatic" option results in no help, so I try the "Custom" option which takes me through step-by-step configuration of the program. Now, I know the way I have set this up is correct, but testing incoming connections says "the server is unable to connect to this computer". There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the router port mappings (namely, I cannot edit them when I go to my gateway) and there is no firewall installed that might prevent connection.

Any help?

Hello!

I tried out that client, and it is rather schnazzy - nothing like purely java applications, especially those that work!

The errors you're getting are fine in terms of the unpacking and such, be sure that you have an updated version of jdk/jre and you do have a firewall - check IPtables, though it shouldn't be blocking anything. Also try running as root. See if that helps anything.

Best of luck!

Thanks a lot, I got it working in the end! It's a nice client, but now I use Pidgin and qNext interchangeably. Not that it matters anymore, I've switched to a smaller distro. But I do intend to continue using Sabayon, just as soon as I find a new DVD cause my last DVDRW broke XD

I appreciate the help, all the same.

y'know, you could always just burn the miniED and use the equo --word command to get yourself a full-fledged, completely updated Sabayon
