Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird not working

Postby kettlehead » Tue Jan 08, 2008 6:32

Hi everyone

I am a real newbie to all things linux, but I had had such good reports about sabayon I though I would give it a try.

Because I'm not sure what info people need to help me troubleshoot this problem I thought I would start very basically. In other words when I try to start either Firefox or Thunderbird the bouncing Icon appears for a few seconds and then nothing. The mouse arrow returns and nothing else happens,

Everything else appears to be working normally.

Any trouble shooting tips or a way in which i can "reset" both firefox and thunderbird would be great.

I am using mini edition 3.4.

Thank you

try
Code: Select all
emerge mozilla-firefox-bin mozilla-thunderbird-bin

if that don't work than run them from konsole and see what errors spit out.

Thanks for the help Wolfden

I ran the command in konsole anyway and everything appears to be OK, i.e no errors. However neither of the two applications want to run!?! :(

Any other suggestion appreciated.

hmmmm weird,

so does it work now when you click on their icons? If not, use the menu editor and see what in the world the icons are point at. Alt F2 should open a run box and you should be able to type them in there to run em too.

Might wanna try the distro binaries:
Code: Select all
equo update
equo install mozilla-firefox
equo install mozilla-thunderbird

And maybe and perhaps run:

Code: Select all
equo deptest

Just a thought.
I've installed firefox through equo on the mini, and it worked out fine.

Hi

I've tried a few of the options you guys have suggested and the only real progress I have had is that when I run Firefox from the Run Command I get the following Error Message

No running windows found
Error launching firefox-bin:

There are files in your profile that are owned by a user other than
tim. firefox-bin can't execute in this condition. Here are some of
the files that I found:
/home/tim/.mozilla/firefox/uq3g6doz.default/prefs.js

You can fix this problem by running the following:
su -c 'chown -R tim:tim /home/tim/.mozilla'

Tried following the instructions i.e ran the command, but still no joy

Update: Firefox is running normally now, however Thunderbird is not. I get the same error message as described above except the reference to the file is
/home/tim/.thunderbird/su20ihfo.default/prefs.js

Any other ideas. And thanks again for all the help

I've been defeated. I cannot, for the life of me get thunderbird to work so I have saved off the files I need and blown sabayon away and reinstalled.

Hopefully this time round I'll keep to what I understand and not mess the thing up.

thanks to those guys that helped. I appreciate your time.
