missing /etc/make.profile symlink

ok i have already tried to search for this but i really didnt find anything, but my problem is that when i try to update portage it gives me a message saying:


# emerge portage
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the '/etc/make.profile' symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

and i am not sure what is wrong and i really need to update portage but i cant and this is my first time that i will be updating portage please help

and i also get the same thing when i try to run this command

#emerge -v gkrellm
