Professional Windows Graphics Programs on Sabayon

Postby srulop » Sun Oct 21, 2007 19:48

Hi,
I'm kinda new to Linux, but I tryed Sabayon and liked it more than any other distro that I tryed before. I liked it so much, that I want to use it for something more useful than the cool window minimize effects.
BUT, I'm a professional graphic designer (part time) and I'm using programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Flash, Dreamveawer, ect... I was wondering if there is some way to make them work on Sabayon without running Windows in the background, and without slowing the system noticebly. Is there a way to do it? I heard about WINE - is it the solution? Will it slow the system? Is there any way to make it work, or in my case it's better to just stick to Windows?

Thanks for advise... :)

Wine does work but requires a fair bit of learning and doesn't work with all apps. There is a commercial product called Crossover Linux that will work with many Windows apps. However, why not try the Linux equivalents and see how you get on. Have a look at this page to see suggestions as to what you could use to do what you want to do: http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

There are plenty of native programs that can replace some of those apps, and the rest could probably work in Wine. You could also run Windows in a virtual machine for the apps that won't run in wine. If all else fails, I'd go MacOS in your case anyway, much better media development platform.

This is one of the main reasons why I still have my desktop using xp... Im a fellow freelance web developer as well, and as far as Ive come to realize, there are really no replacements that match the adobe suite's intuitiveness and power, but that's not to say that there aren't some very good programs available...

so far, these are the best equivalents Ive worked with:

Photoshop/Fireworks -> GimpShop
Dreamweaver -> Aptana, Quanta plus (wysiwyg), Komodo Edit or Bluefish (minimalistic, sort of like BBedit)
Flash -> F4L
Illustrator -> Xara Xtreme, or inkscape (minus the 3d fx capabilities for both)
3ds max -> blender (havent really used it much, but I hear its a good substitute)
InDesign -> Scribus

really, the only reason why I haven't adopted those for my main use, is because I haven't had the time to grow accustom to them yet, but maybe they'll work out for you...
