Cannot log in to bank account

Postby farfnarf » Tue Sep 11, 2007 22:45

Hello, I had this same problem with Freespire, but it does not occur with Windows
Vista or with PCLinuxOS 2007.1.

I attempt to log in to my bank account and get a perpetual "processing login"
page that sits there for as long as I let it (I've let it go for 12 minutes thinking it
might work).

Also, on the "first time log in" page, where I try to get it to start over, I get a
false "false information" prompt after my account number.

None of this occurs with the other two computers in the house.

The website is http://www.pinnbank.com. Maybe somebody here can set up a
temporary account there and give it a try with Sabayon 3.4f and let me know
what happens.

I've called the bank about it, but they insist it has to do with my operating
system.

Any ideas? Is this common with some distros but not others?

What browser are you using? If not using Firefox, try it. You may need to tweak your settings in the preferences page.

Unless it requires ActiveX, then, you may need to run Internet Explorer through WINE...

Thanx for responding, momocore.

I use only Firefox and have the same settings on all machines, wrt cookies and security
and other relevant tweaks.

For some reason only a few distros (and Vista and XP) can log me in to that bank site.
I am wondering if it is something in the kernel. I honestly can't figure it out
and neither could they over in the Freespire forums.

Maybe there's a geeky type here that can shed some light on the issue. I know it's
not a "bug" in the distros that won't work there, just a difference somewhere or
other.

It looks like Flash is embedded in the site and they use it to check prior logons if no cookies are available... Did you try the following?

Code: Select all
sudo emerge netscape-flash

That may be the root of the problem, not sure though...

Hmm.. that is interesting, momocore. I am wondering though.. if I do that will it
mess up the flash that is in the plugins already. One of the plugins listed when I
do "about:plugins" is:

File name: libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r31

Have you tried installing an extension to change how Firefox announces itself? Some bank websites check the browser string to "make sure" you're using Windows. I wouldn't expect it to make the login go on indefinitely, but there is always the possibility that they are inept.

It shouldn't, I just installed it and it seems to work fine. You may want to edit your ~/.mozilla/firefox/plginreg.dat file to remove the duplicate entry, though. Also, I just thought of this... is pipelining enabled? Check you about:config and see, if it is, that could be causing your problems. I know some sites hate pipelining and refuse to load properly with it enabled.

Try open the bank account in Konqueror. My mom's account showed the same behaviour, but opens fine in Konqueror.

The same settings, pipelining and the plugins, etc, are in all browsers on the
machines with Vista and PCLinuxOS that are able to log in to the bank
account. It is not an issue with that.

But I'm still wondering about that code suggested up there. I'm going to
give that a shot and see what happens.
