Workstation graphics?

Postby DragoonXX » Thu Jun 21, 2007 21:36

i had one theory that i was wondering if anyone knew if/what the answer would be
linux uses openGL for graphics rendering- right? and standard graphics cards are designed to not perform well in openGL environments...so a logical assumption would be to use workstation (see ATI FireGL type cards) for linux...
would it work? thanks for any input

ok, i'll try to re-hash my theory then
standard desktop graphics solutions (whether they be say radeon 9 series, the x/x1k, HD 2000...whatever...or nvidia GeForce X) are designed to perform better under directX through code modifications in the die itself, and in driver code, whereas cards like the ATI FireGL and Nvidia Quadro series cards...are designed to perform better in openGL environments and poorly under directX.
so, with linux primarily operating in an OpenGL environment...would a workstation (see the FireGL or nvidia quadro) graphics card perform better than it's desktop counterpart?

oh I see what you are saying, hmmmmmmm, I have no idea since I have never heard any different myself.

I know people are gaming in linux just like they are in windows

yeah, but personally i'm not heavily into gaming on linux...as far as i'm concerned- that's the one thing winblows is useful for.

GPU chipsets implements simply 3D acceleration primitives. The performance problems under DirectX or OpenGL is usually more a matter of drivers than the GPU itself.

Tell me about it!

(ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 and no way can I get XGL and DRI to work under SL.)

EDIT: BTW, eduardhc, what a drag I had this morning to get from Sants to El Prat: Renfe had problems again. Did you go to the Stones concert last night? I didn't even know they were in Barcelona until a colleague told me yesterday evening.

wrong ... software support is the problem not hardware ... from hardware GPU point of view opengl or directx is the same ... directx api has the windows money , with more focus to a good game api, were opengl is supported by major industrial firms, with high end graphics modelling needs, think about all virtual reality stuff and graphics modelling, films like shrek etc ...

the problem is like all problem where is windows evil touch ... the push for a split of standards ... and when the push'ers is winblows then is a PUSH .... like java vs. .net almost push ... etc ... everytime bill will see a succesful technology will try to duplicate and split them, of course to windows platform only windows solution will work better ... look at most recent issue, the slowdown of google search desktop to windows vista .... but now this strategy will blow right to its face ... google is not a small player, easy to stuff and crush with a pile of money ... noo... no more ....
linux is free, the expertise to harness it is not!
you don't make so much money selling open source software!
You make MORE money USING it, just like google!

Ooops, sorry. I had completely forgotten the thread. And about the train service here, well, I don't know if you are up to date on this subject, but lately RENFE (the Spanish public train company) is offering a really disastrous service.

Are you spanish / catalan / wahetever (don't wanna enter into politics, you know... ;) ) ?

And not, I didn't go to Stones concert. I really like Their Geriatric Majesties :D, but nowadays I'm pretty busy with my 2 little daugthers to think about things like that :P

^ Yep, I know all about Renfe's problems: I've had to wait on the platform or queue for the replacement bus service at Estació de Sants several times due to delays or cancellations of the Renfe Cercanías service when I'm in Barcelona.

No, I'm not Spanish (not even Catalan  )

Un saludo.
