Sabayon hardware compatability and Virtualization

Postby ToneDeaf » Tue May 29, 2007 17:54

Hi all, I am wondering if anybody knows about hardware compatibility with the Geforce 8600 go and the intel PRO wireless 4965 a/g/n, particularly in this laptop: http://www.xoticpc.com/product_info.php?wconfigure=yes&products_id=1983 It is a Compal with the newfangled Santa Rosa CPUs. Please tell if the fact that it is a laptop matters or not in general. I am confident sabayon will make it work, even if I need to use ndiswrapper for the wireless, but I want to make sure.

Thank you,
Tonedeaf

PS: Could anybody tell me what kind of virtualization is available in Sabayon? I need to run windows 2000 for small things (Chips challenge, Visualboy advance, etcetera,) until I find all the Linux equivalents I need.

AFAIK: kvm & virtualbox (I use virtualbox svn on x86_64)

If nvidia card then have to check for the nvidia 100.?? driver we are currently using so if anyone has gotten it to work using the 100.?? driver in any linux then yes 8600 works.
Check gentoo.org forums or google for "8600 linux nvidia" or similar to find a answer. I presume it should work as the 8800gtx ultra warrawarra works in linux and 8600 is similar but much slower.

Intel 4965 works in 3.4e not sure of anything before it but it should be in 3.4 loop3 or later versions.

Recent versions of SL suggested total 20gb or more clear space for Sabayon dvd versions needed
3.4loop3 dvd
1.0 BE dvd
3.4a dvd
3.4e dvd
3.4e cd in the works / next soon.

Virtual pc on linux = yes see the forums here we havea virtual pc / manager part .
Virutalbox ,
Vmware ,
Xen ,
Parallels
then a tough one = qemu.

3.4e version has "wine doors" and might be able to run the software you need directly on linux without any windows needed not sure here / new feature.
directx 9c / winamp works in it maybe your software might as well.

Hope this helps.
PS> wiki on top of this page has a lot of answers or gentoo.org forums / wiki or google = your best friend.

Found some info on the 8600m laptop nvidia.
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-a.html
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-56 ... 8600m.html

Not much info around but might help.
Also the only real way you would now if it works is to download and run the live dvd.
The screen will work / display everything even in 3.3b mini / cd size Sabayon not sure if nvidia 97.xx would work or can update to 100.xx driver in the live cd session to test.

You can download Sabayon 1.0 BE as this is fairly small (half dvd size) and has the 100.xx nvidia driver in it , it works 100% on my 7800gtx laptop.

Can verify the 4965 card works well after a sync and re-merging the iwlwifi and wpa_supplicant

ive an 8600M GS and worked flawlessly with the nvidia drivers

as others ahve said, look into wine or wine doors, or one of the virtulisation solutions

and WOOO to chips challenge ;)

Edit:
sorry to bump dead thread, got to it via a search for something else
